Tours are led by volunteers and staff of the Community Education Program. The 1½- to 2-hour walking tour provides an overview of some of the important research currently taking place at HIMB as well as an introduction to the natural and human history of Moku o Lo ‘e (Coconut Island). Due to the logistics and program content, we generally limit school visits to 5th graders and above. Learning is best when group size is held to 20 or fewer participants, but with enough advance notice, we can accommodate a maximum group size of 40.

For All Tours

For all tours, please carefully review the planning packet before submitting your tour request. ALL participants are required to sign the HIMB Visitor Waiver. Waivers for visitors under 18 years of age require the signature of a parent or guardian, so be sure to provide copies of this form to students in advance. Any participants arriving without a completed Waiver form will not be allowed to travel to Coconut Island and will miss the tour. Maps to Lilipuna Road and He’eia Kea pier are available, as well as parking instructions for your visit.

The CEP does NOT schedule trips to individual research labs, the Marine Mammal Research Program, or conduct water-based tours. For visits to research labs, contact the scientist in charge of that lab or program by seeing the HIMB “Faculty” page for contact information for individual labs.
