The 1990 Edwin W. Pauley Summer Program in Marine Biology focused on developing a better understanding of the behavioral ecology and ethology of coral reef animals. In addition to regularly scheduled lectures, students participated in a variety of other activities. During the first week, Ed Hayashi from the University of Hawaii Diving Safety Office checked out all the students who wanted to SCUBA dive during the course. Bob Airhart and Nat Tracey from the Coast Guard Auxillary made a presentation on boat safety and the new boating regulations for Kaneohe Bay. All students were also checked out on use of the whalers by the shop crew. Several workshops and demonstrations were held. Dr. Kim Holland and Fred Voegeli demonstrated tracking techniques with the newest equipment available. Dr. Tim Tricas and Dr. Kim Holland ahad students construct telemetry units that could be placed in animals for tracking. Dr. Jan Smith and Dr. George Barlow instructed students on how to anesthetize and color-mark fishes. Bill Tyler and Frank Stanton demonstrated techniques for proper use of underwater camera and video equipment. Dr. George Losey and Jeff Mahon organized a crew to lower a very large video camera off the end of the point for remote control viewing. Regular Wednesday evening seminars were preceeded by a potluck barbeque. In addition to the evening seminars, several University of Hawaii graduate students were invited to present their research projects. And there were always lots of opportunities for diving!
