1997 Edwin W. Pauley Summer Program in Marine Biology
Reproduction in Reef Corals
June - August, 1997

The 15th Annual Edwin W. Pauley Summer Program in Marine Biology at Coconut Island was broadly focused on the topic of coral reproduction. Although there has been exponential growth in the quantity of knowledge about coral reproduction within the last decade, there are still many unanswered questions. This aspect of coral biology has ramifications for many major areas of reef ecology and evolution. Knowledge of coral reproduction provides the foundation for studies of coral population dynamics, biogeography and the evolutionary biology of corals. Studies of coral reproduction will also play a role in the development of techniques for coral reef restoration and for monitoring of toxic substances in the marine environment. The potential impacts of global climate change on coral reefs also include a component of effects on coral reproduction.
The Edwin W. Pauley Summer Programs have a long history of excellence in student research projects. These programs were developed with the generous support of the Edwin W. Pauley Foundation. The Pauley family previously owned Coconut Island and invited the University of Hawai‘i to establish a marine laboratory on Coconut Island. They also took great personal interest in the research conducted at the Hawai‘i Institute of Marine Biology. The location of the facility within Ka¯ne‘ohe Bay and the excellent seawater system at the laboratory provides an ideal setting for a variety of research topics in marine biology. Through the continuing support of the Edwin W. Pauley Foundation, the tradition of excellence for student research in marine biology will continue.
The 1997 Summer Program brought together students and researchers from the United States, Australia, Tonga, Japan, Guam, Panama, Brazil and Israel (see the lists of student participants and faculty and staff). The results reported here span a variety of topics in coral reproduction, including new reports of coral spawning in Hawai‘i, techniques for larval rearing, the impacts of potential pollutants on aspects of reproductive success, histological analysis of early reproductive stages, energetics of reproduction, influence of skeletal damage on reproduction, and factors that impact larval survival and settlement.
