    Science Management Integration and Communications

Ecosystem-based management requires effective communication systems for the public, science, and management partners that bypass existing differences in organizational culture and styles of communication. Effective communication is achieved through continuing analysis of the research partnership to better define communication links. Although specific differences in organization and style exist within the partnership, successful integration has been accomplished using techniques such as the development of symposia, semi-annual reports and outreach. A key component to the success of our partnership is the integration of science into the management process. Ecosystem-based management relies heavily on scientific inquiry for an understanding of the status and changes related to the managed environment. Examination of how organization structure, communication styles and cultural differences impact integration of science and management allows us to diminish differences between the two, applying these concepts to the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Research Partnership.
