Documents, DNA, And Databases: The Slave Trade and African American Roots

The presentation will use documentary and visual evidence, DNA studies, and the W.E.B. DuBois database to explore novel ways of discussing African American history and the links to specific regions and peoples in West and Central Africa. The presentation draws on our experience as consultants on the PBS series African American Lives, and will pay particular attention to the pitfalls and promises of the new insights from the Human Genome Project.

New Insights into the African American Diaspora: The Central African and West African Waves to North America and Brazil

Using a variety of recent research the presentation will explore the cultural implications that resulted from the concentrations of specific African ethnicities in various areas of the Americas. The focus will be on the Angolan wave to the Americas in the early 17th century, the Igbo wave to Virginia in the late 17th and early 18th century and the Mina wave to Brazil in the 18th century.

The Danny Kaleikini Kahala Hilton Hotel Scholarship

Undergraduate or graduate students whose declared major is in one of the departments of the College of Arts and Humanities (American Studies, Art, Music, History, Philosophy, Religion, Speech, and Theatre & Dance) are eligible for a $1,500 scholarship for Fall 2008. This scholarship is awarded each semester.

Undergraduate Summer Research Awards

Any undergraduate, regardless of discipline or major, who will not graduate before May 2009 is eligible to apply for an award of up to $3,000 to support an independent research project that will be carried out during the summer months.

The Spring 2008 deadline is Friday, February 29th.
