The Hawai‘i Internet Exchange is an Internet exchange point managed and funded by the University of Hawai‘i Information Technology Services to provide a way to keep local Hawai‘i Government, Education and Research Internet traffic local to the State.

Since its inception in 1995, the HIX has morphed from a community based peering point to a Government, Education and Research peering point. Over the years as the Internet has become critical to business, other commercial entities are more suited to providing local Hawaii Internet Exchange services for local companies.

Membership in the HIX is free and open to government, education and research institutions in the State of Hawai`i as long as the HIX requirements are met. The HIX peers with the DRFortress IX to connect the Government, Education and Research networks to the local provider networks in Hawaii.
