News & Announcements

Hurricane officially ceased operation on 30 June 2008. Hopefully, all our users were able to finish their jobs and move their data before the machine actually shut down. There was a few day delay while the last of the users got everything off, but otherwise the process went smoothly. Several of our users have transferred their work to Jaws, some researchers have applied for accounts on Midnight at ARSC, and some have found other resources through the TeraGrid.

Summer Internships in full swing. We just passed the halfway point for our summer intern program at MHPCC. The two JEOM interns, Eric McCary, Albany State University, and Cassie Cabaong, UH Hilo, are in Seattle, WA, for a special DoD colloquium, followed by the DoD Users Group Meeting next week. Then they will return to their internship. The final presentations will be July 31 at MHPCC, so if you are in Maui, and would like to attend, be sure to contact Linda Martin at 808-879-5077 or email Linda.Martin@mhpcc.hpc.mil for access (U.S. citizens only, please).

Engagement Grant presentations on Maui. The results of some of the 2008-09 Engagement Grant awards will be presented on Maui (not at MHPCC, but at a non-secure site) on July 30. If you would like to attend, contact Linda Martin at 808-879-5077 or email Linda.Martin@mhpcc.hpc.mil. All the projects will be presented at UH Manoa with possible video to neighbor island sites September 2nd and 3rd - watch for times and an agenda. If you want to pre-register for the event, call Dr. Susan Brown at 808-956-2808 or email stbrown@hawaii.edu.

Submit your entry for the MHPCC Application Briefs 2008. Take a look at last year's edition if you haven't seen it before: MHPCC Application Briefs 2007 These briefs are hand picked to represent the work done at the MHPCC by government and university researchers and are distributed to the center's sponsors, visitors, associated government entities, and interested parties throughout the year. They are distributed in both hardcopy magazines and on small CDs. It's a great way to get some additional recognition. Send your entry (or your intent to submit) to Betty Duncan at Betty.Duncan@mhpcc.hpc.mil. She will help you with format and editing.

The grant covers basic registration, airfare, hotel, and per diem. The recipient is expected to present their work either as a presentation or a poster or both in the MHPCC booth area. Download and complete the SC08 Travel Grant Application Form, and email it to stbrown@hawaii.edu.. Deadline is August 4, 2008.

SC08 Broader Engagement Program! Faculty, students, or professional staff who are typically underrespresented in the computational sciences (women, African Americans, Native Americans, Hawaiian, Pacific Islanders, etc.) and who are also U.S. citizens are eligible to apply for participation in the Broader Engagement Initiative. Those accepted into this program receive not only travel funds, registration, and hotel expenses, but they also have a program of speakers and events in addition to the main conference. They will be connected with a mentor in their technical field in addition to the many networking opportunities the conference provides. Be sure to apply if you are interested!
