As a University of Hawaii (UH) faculty member, student, or research employee, you are eligible to use Jaws, a DoD, 5120 processor Dell PowerEdge cluster, housed at Maui High Performance Computing Center (MHPCC), should your project require the power and speed of a supercomputer. These instructions outline the few simple steps necessary to establish your account and start running jobs.
Next, apply for an account on Jaws. This is done online, via the online account application form found at https://www.mhpcc.hpc.mil/forms/. Click on New Userid/Account Form link.
You must also complete the DoD Information Assurance Awareness Training, found at http://iase.disa.mil/eta/iaa-trainingv6/DoD_IAA_V6/index.html.
When you are finished, print out the Certificate of Completion, sign and date it, then fax it to 808-879-5018.
Click on the Acceptable Use Agreement link at https://www.mhpcc.hpc.mil/forms/. Print out the agreement, READ and initial each section, sign and date. Return to MHPCC via fax (808-879-5018) or mail (550 Lipoa Parkway, Kihei, Maui, HI 96753).
Download and fully complete the Questionnaire for Public Trust Positions (Standard Form 85P) located at: http://www.opm.gov/forms/pdf_fill/SF85P.pdf
Type or legibly print answers to all questions in black ink. This fillable pdf format can also be completed using your own computer, printer and the free Acrobat Reader program. NOTE: You will not be able to save any data entered into the form, unless you are using a commercial version of the Acrobat software (not the free Acrobat Reader.)
Further detailed instructions regarding the NAC application process can be found at: http://www.hawaii.edu/hpc/sf85p_instructions.html
After completing the SF 85P it must be sent to UH Industrial Security Services (ISS) for further processing. The SF 85P will contain your personal and confidential information. To ensure that transmission of this data is done securely, call UH ISS at 808-956-3179 to discuss the best transmission method for your individual situation. Suggested methods of secure transmission are:
1. By Hand-Delivery: Call ISS at 808-956-3179 to make arrangements to hand-deliver the completed paper copy of SF 85P or electronically completed SF 85P saved on electronic media such as a CD or flash drive.
2. By Mail: Send completed SF 85P to:
Industrial Security Services, NAC Processing
2532 Correa Rd., Bldg. 37
Honolulu, HI 96822-2216
3. By Fax: Call ISS at 808-956-3179 PRIOR to faxing the completed SF 85P to 808-956-5025
4. By Electronic Transmission: Please call 808-956-3179 for specific instructions on how to send this file in a secured manner WITH AUTHENTICATION to the ISS representative.
In all instances, email uh-nac@hawaii.edu to indicate that you have submitted a completed SF 85P for processing.
An Industrial Security Services representative will contact you when the SF 85P has been reviewed for completeness and accuracy. You will be scheduled for an appointment to complete the process by verifying your information and have fingerprinting done. Bring your passport or other proof of citizenship with you to this appointment. Once the NAC process is completed, you will be notified when your account is ready to use.
After you have submitted your NAC and applied for an account on the MHPCC web site, you will receive your SecurID card, and your Kerberos login information. Then follow these instructions:
Go to https://www.hpcmo.hpc.mil/security/kerberos/ and follow the instructions to download the Kerberos Client software package for your operating system. This is all you will need; it will give you Kerberos, Filezilla, ftp, and PuTTY. For JAWS access, you will only use Kerberos and PuTTY, but this download gives you the whole package. Don't bother with the Configuration Files or the SSH Client software (the SSH Client software will only give you command-line SSH with no GUI).
There are instructions on the MHPCC website for PC, Mac, and Unix machines: http://www.mhpcc.hpc.mil/accounts/secure_login.html
The Kerberos kit will contain various applications; we recommended you use krb5 and PuTTY.
Be sure that you return the signed receipt for your SecureID card to get your account activated.
Upon executing krb5 you will enter your MHPCC user ID, followed by your Kerberos password, followed by your Kerberos realm which is MHPCC.HPC.MIL (in all caps). Read the instructions included with the password.
Then you will get a window that asks for a passcode. Enter your PIN into your RSA SecurID Card, press the diamond and then enter the displayed 6-digit code into the space provided. You should get a green ticket.
Now you are ready to use PuTTY to SSH in.
Start PuTTY. Enter the ENTIRE host name (jaws-login1.mhpcc.hpc.mil, for example) or IP address. You should now be at the prompt.

NOTE: If you are a foreign national, after the NAC forms are submitted, you can expect a wait of up to several months. The government must run a check on the information you have provided before giving you your account. You may check on it periodically by emailing stbrown@hawaii.edu. If you are a U.S. citizen, your account will be activiated as soon as the paperwork is mailed to the government for review. It takes a week or two, however, to set up the account, the secureID card, and send you your information.
