The Human Papillomaviruses (HPV) are a group of more than 100 types of viruses transmitted through sexual intercourse and may be present in as many as 1 out of 3 sexually active young adults. Most HPV studies have been done with women and HPV infection of the cervix had been shown to be a cause of cervical cancer, however, little is known about HPV infection in men. Free HPV testing is available on campus at the University Health Services and at the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii through the University of Hawai'i Cancer Research Center Study of HPV in Men.

What you may not know:

HPVs are the most common sexually transmitted infection worldwide.

HPVs are the major cause of cervical cancer. Data from several studies also suggest that infection with HPV is a risk factor for penile cancer (cancer of the penis) and other cancers. HPVs may also play a role in cancers of the anus, vulva, and some cancers of the oropharynx

HPV infection usually causes no symptoms and may go undetected unless specific tests are done.

The HPVs that causes the common warts grow on hands and feet are different from those that cause growths in the genital area.

Most HPV infections come and go over the course of a few months or years. However, sometimes HPV infection persists for many years, with or without causing cell abnormalities
