The Pacific Telecommunications Conference (PTC) has been bringing the major players in telecommunications for the Asia Pacific Region to Hawaii every year since 1979. PTC2000, scheduled for January 31 - February 2, will be an international gathering of about 1700 delegates representing industry, government, academia and non-governmental organizations from thoughout the region. Plenary speakers at the conference include such luminaries as the past and present Secretaries-General of the International Telecommunications Union, the Chairman of NTT Mobile Communication, the CEO of Comsat, the Vice-Chair of Global Crossing, and representatives of several of Hawaii's own recent telecommunications startups. Conference sessions will address the full breadth of telecommunications from applications and technologies to regulatory policy and social implications. Concurrent with the conference, PTC hosts Hawaii's largest telecommunications trade show which is open to the public at no cost. And PTC is famous for the number of side events and business opportunities that bring high-level executives to Honolulu each January.
This month's High Tech Hawaii will discuss the past, present and future of PTC and its role in Hawaii's economic development and positioning as the "Hub of the Pacific." Joining host David Lassner will be Hoyt Zia, the new Executive Director of PTC who recently moved to Honolulu from Washington DC where he served in the U.S. Department of Commerce, and Dr. Michael Ogden, Associate Professor of Communications at UH-Manoa.
