WRITING ACROSS THE CURRICULUM
ASSESSMENT INSTITUTE
For
college teachers in all programs and subject areas who place a high value on
student learning through writing and thinking activities.
*
Prerequisite: This institute is intended for teachers familiar with basic
writing across the curriculum techniques. Attendance at the May 19-30 WAC+
Summer Institute or a similar one is highly recommended.
The name of the game, these days,
seems to be accountability. Politicians, administrators, even WASC accrediting
teams are increasingly asking for evidence that students are in fact learning
in our schools. What can individual classroom teachers do?
The institute will focus on various
approaches for finding out what students are learning in our classes,
including:
* authentic assessment
* classroom assessment techniques
* portfolio assessment
* writing
assignments: design, response to student
work, grading
Participants will work in a collaborative,
experiential format that interweaves reading, guest presentations, and hands on
experience using various assessment methods.
NOTE: This
institute will work with methods of assessing student learning rather than
attempts to measure levels of achievement.
Support for
this Program
KCC
faculty will receive a stipend of $100. Faculty from other campuses will need
to make arrangements with their own campus administration.
