We are happy to participate in the e-mail discussion list BAHASA.
This list is intended to be a forum for communication and discussion
among teachers of Indonesian and Malaysian, linguists, and other
scholars, students, and researchers with an interest in the
Malay-Indonesian language. Subscribers are urged to post questions,
ideas, notices of new findings, job announcements, conference and
workshop announcements, publications or reviews, new teaching
material, and anything else that relates to the teaching of
Indonesian or related matters.
Anything posted should be expected to generate a "thread" of
responses and reactions from other subscribers. Proper "netiquette"
should always be used in these exchanges. At times that means
answering queries or making comments directly via e-mail to a poster,
and not replying to the list for general broadcast. I do not
anticipate that the "flamewars" sometimes encountered elsewhere on
the infobahn will be a problem here, though vigorous discussion and
fundamental disagreements will certainly occur.
The list welcomes postings in any of the principal languages of research in Indonesian studies -- English, Indonesian, Dutch, French, or German, -- though it may be desirable to keep as much traffic as possible in English and Malaysian/Indonesian. To send a message to the list, simply address your comments to bahasa@listserv.dartmouth.edu. If you have any questions, problems, or queries not appropriate for the whole list, send them directly to me.
Uli Kozok is the primary list owner, doing maintenance and coordinating policy. Tim Behrend is the secondary list owner, also involved in any policy decisions. Jody Diamond (jody.diamond@dartmouth.edu) is the list sponsor at the Dartmouth server
Because the list is run through the Listserv software at
Dartmouth, a number of functions relevant to the list are automated,
and can be performed directly by subscribers by issuing commands
addressed to
listserv@dartmouth.edu. If you want to subscribe, unsubscribe, or to

We are well aware that there are many people just beginning to play with e-mail who are ill at ease outside their familiar Mac/Windows or word processor environment. If you fall into this category, or if the Majordomo explanations above have confused you, don't worry. Anyone who does not wish to communicate with listserv software may contact either Tim or Uli directly at in regular English (Indonesian, Dutch, German, French etc.), and we will gladly show you exactly what needs to be done.
All new BAHASA listers are requested to take a few minutes and
introduce themselves so that other netters can get an idea of who you
are, and what you are interested in. To do this, just respond to the
questionnaire below.
The best way to proceed would be to clip the form and fill it in as
is. ***Please follow as closely as possible the format given in the
example that follows the clip-out form.*** Then, post it to the list
(bahasa@listserv.dartmouth.edu) for all to read.
