The study of Indonesian (bahasa Indonesia)
has two major objectives. One is to equip students with appropriate
knowledge and skills to communicate effectively in standard Indonesian/Malay,
and to be able to read critically a wide range of sources in these
languages. The other is to develop through language study a sympathetic
understanding of the complex and diverse cultures of the Malay
world: Indonesia, Malaysia, East Timor, Brunei and Singapore.
