Leadership Through Personal Awareness

Leadership

Leadership: The ABILITY to INTERACT with People in such a way that they ALIGN with you for a common purpose.

Ability:
  • Are leaders born or made?

  • - skills development
  • Characteristics

  • - charismatic, confident, bold, fearless, powerful, articulate, etc.
  • An experience vs. an assessment
  • Getting out of the way of yourself

"WE CONSTANTLY SABOTAGE OUR RELATIONSHIPS AND LIFE GOALS WITHOUT A CLEAR UNDERSTANDING OF OUR OWN SELF-WORTH."

Interact with People:
  • People skills development
    • eye contact
    • listening
    • feedback
    • showing up in the present

"WHAT YOU SEE IN OTHER PEOPLE IS A REFLECTION OF WHAT YOU SEE IN YOURSELF. YOUR EXPERIENCE OF ANOTHER PERSON COMES FROM WHAT YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED IN YOURSELF."

Align:
  • Pursuing a leader's vision without losing sight of your own
    • does not require agreement
    • never involves compromise
    • encourages self-worth

TWO BASES OF LEADERSHIP
Vision Based
  • Leadership for others
  • Examples: Jesus Christ, Abraham Lincoln
Fear Based
  • self-fulfiling
  • Examples: satan, Adolph Hitler
Leadership comes as a result of a command from higher authority.
The command assigns responsibility.
Responsibility
  • may never be delegated.
  • implies accountability. The command also issues authority.
  • Authority
  • may be delegated.
  • implies accountability.

  •
    • Leadership is not a chain that is only as strong as its weakest link. Leadership in organizations, businesses, and relationships is only as strong as its leader.

    •
    • Human resources is as much an oxymoron as peacekeeping missiles. Attempting to manage people is a mistake. You manage things and lead people. People are not resources, business assets, or just numbers on a ledger. People are individuals with futures and dreams.

    •
    • When people become resources, companies downsize, merge, and sometimes shut down. If you don't believe that, then believe this, over one-half of the Fortune 500 companies listed in 1991 are no longer in existence. Why? Loyality, integrity, honesty, caring, and friendship are characteristics of people, not things.

[For those rooted in a Jewish, Christian, Islamic or other monotheist faith, Leo makes the following additional points:]
    • God is the only higher authority.

    •
    • The command to lead must come from God. If the command to lead does not come from God then the leadership is usurped and doomed to fail. Failure to continue leadership under God's command will result in an insidious downfall.

The # 1 principle of leadership is this:

    TAKE CARE OF YOUR PEOPLE
