catagories exempt research review

Overview

Federal Guidelines allow for some research to be exempt from IRB review. Only the CHS Office / Committee Chair or designated member may approve exempt research. If you believe that your research qualifies for exempt status, you may use the Declaration of Exemption Form (pdf|doc). Please note that this form is only applicable for exempt research and if the Committee determines that the research is not exempt you will need to fill out an Application for New Approval / Application Form (pdf|doc).

Exempt research still must fulfill investigator responsibilities for the protection of human subjects. Supporting documents include a brief description of proposed research (please do not simply attach a copy of a Dissertation proposal) highlighting the use of human subjects / participants and an explanation as to why you believe the research is exempt, a list of questions or survey instruments (if applicable), and consent / assent forms (if applicable).

Please review the categories eligible for exempt approval.

How to Apply for Exempt Review

To apply for exempt review, an original signed Declaration of Exemption Form (pdf|doc) and 1 copy, plus two sets of any supporting documents is required.

Drop-off applications at 2540 Maile Way, Spalding Hall 253, University of Hawaii Manoa, Honolulu, HI 96822.

Allow about seven days for review if no additional materials or revisions are needed. Some proposals may take longer depending on the topic and proposed research activities.

Notes:

Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

Exempt Research does not require Continuing Research Review unless the project changes, in which case the CHS Office must be notified to determine if the project still qualifies as Exempt Research.

If the Committee determines the research does not qualify for exempt review, you will be notified and additional copies will be required for Full Board Review.
