Federal Guidelines allow for some research to qualify for expedited
review and approval. Only the Committee Chair or designated member may
approve expedited research.
Expedited research still must fulfill investigator responsibilities for
the protection of human subjects. Supporting documents include a brief
description of proposed research or protocol (please do not simply
attach a copy of a Dissertation proposal) highlighting the use of human
subjects / participants and justification as to why you believe the
research qualifies for expedited review, a list of questions or survey
instruments (if applicable), and consent / assent forms (if
applicable).
Please check the categories
eligible for expedited review.
To apply for an expedited review, a full Application for New Approval
Form / Application Form (pdf|doc) is required (do not
use the Declaration of Exemption Form). 1 original signed Application
Form and 1 copy, with 2 sets of supporting documents is required.
Drop-off applications at 1960 East-West Road, Biomedical Building,
B-104, University
of Hawaii Manoa, Honolulu, HI 96822.
Allow about seven days for review if no additional materials or
revisions are needed. Some proposals may take longer depending on the
topic and proposed research activities.
Notes:
Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.
Expedited approvals are valid for up to 1 year. If research activities
continue beyond the approval period, a renewal must be obtained by the
approval expiration date to avoid non-compliance with CHS rules.
To apply for renewal a properly completed Status Report form (pdf|doc) must be submitted.
See the section on Continuing Research Revew
for further information.
If the Committee determines the research does not qualify for expedited
review, you will be notified and additional copies will be required for
Full Board Review.
