Additional student fees vary by campus. Students living on campus can expect to pay about $6,957 for housing and meals, books and supplies, transportation and personal expenses. (Dormitories and/or apartments are available at UH Manoa 3,171 beds, UH Hilo 634 beds and Maui Community College 55 beds.) For students living on their own off campus, estimated living expenses are $9,194.

Tenured faculty make up 74 percent of the full-time, tenure-track faculty at UH. Four out of ten faculty members are women.

During 1995, UH professors and researchers won the highest in international honors from Japan (Asian theater, music, cellular biology), Nepal (anthropology), Britain (geophysics) and the Philippines (literature). Notable UH faculty include internationally recognized experts in volcanology and astronomy and nationally acclaimed experts in evolutionary genetics, criminology and psychology.

The University of Hawai‘i won 616 research awards worth $70.2 million and 531 training and special project grants for $69 million during the 1995 fiscal year. Total private giving to UH and the University of Hawai‘i Foundation was $28.5 million in 1994-95.

UH is one of only a handful of Land, Sea and Space Grant institutions--a designation that brings federal dollars and opens opportunities for faculty and students. The Manoa campus is one of only 75 U.S. institutions classified as research universities by the Carnegie Foundation.

UH Hilo is the southernmost baccalaureate campus in the 50 states. Other UH properties of distinction include two mountain-top observatories; an island dedicated to marine biology research; and two popular O‘ahu tourist destinations, Waikiki Aquarium and Lyon Arboretum.
