Known Errors When Subscribing to Listserv Lists (back to top)

Some email software applications allow the user to send enriched, styled messages that are encoded with Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) tags. These HTML tags will interfere with the process of subscribing to a listserv list. To avoid errors, the user must set the email application to send plain text messages. Some email applications will prompt the user whether to send the message in plain text, styled, or both.

As email applications are investigated, instructions on setting the application to prompt for sending in plain or styled text will be posted here.

Instructions for Eudora Users

  1. Open Eudora.
  2. In the menu bar, point-to and click-on Tools.
  3. In the Tools drop-down menu, point-to and click on Options.
  4. In the Options dialogue box and in the Category section, scroll down to the Styled Text icon. Point-to and click-on the Styled Text icon to highlight it.
  5. To the right of the Category section, point-to and click-on Ask me each time until a check mark appears in the box to the left.
  6. Point-to and click-on the OK button.

Instructions for Microsoft Outlook Users

Upon installation, the default format for sending messages in Microsoft Outlook is the Microsoft Outlook Rich Text format. This format is compatible among Outlook users only, and often causes non-Outlook users to receive an attachment labeled Winmail.dat instead of the actual body of the message. Sending email to a listserv list in Outlook Rich Text format will also cause problems for the list server. To avoid this dilemma, always send email in Plain Text format. To change the setting in Outlook:

  1. Click on Tools on the menu bar
  2. Select Options from the drop-down menu
  3. Click on the Mail Format tab in the Options dialogue box
  4. In the Send in this message format option box, select Plain Text
  5. Point-to and click-on the OK button.
