Notice: macOS 13 (Ventura) Advisory (Sep 27 07:12 am)

1/5/2023 this is an update to the original macOS 13 Ventura advisory sent on September 27, 2022:

ITS had previously recommended against upgrading to macOS 13 Ventura while compatibility with ITS supported software and applications could be tested. ITS has tested Ventura with ITS supported software (https://www.hawaii.edu/askus/575) and has found no problems with most supported software, as long as the latest versions of the software are being used.

ITS has also tested Ventura with ITS supported web applications (https://www.hawaii.edu/itsdocs/717/browser.php?type=mac) and has encountered no problems so far.  As a result, ITS has now adopted support for macOS 13 Ventura (https://www.hawaii.edu/askus/802).

If you decide to upgrade to Ventura, please make sure that your Mac has the latest versions of any software such as Microsoft Office.  If you depend on any software that is not listed on the ITS supported software page, please check with the software's vendor to make sure it is compatible with Ventura before updating.  You should also check the ITS supported web applications and make sure the ones you use have been tested as working with Ventura.  If updating to macOS 13 Ventura, ITS recommends that you update to the current release version (13.1 as of writing).

ITS has identified a minor issue affecting some users who upgrade to Ventura and are using the University-provided McAfee Endpoint Security for Mac; however, we have identified a fix. If after updating to Ventura the McAfee icon on the menu bar is grayed out with a red warning triangle, and when clicked on displays a "Your Mac is at risk" error, please follow the steps in this AskUs article: https://www.hawaii.edu/askus/1881.

Apple's list of Mac computers that are compatible with macOS 13 Ventura can be found here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT213264.  Should you decide to upgrade to Ventura, ITS recommends that your Mac have 16GB of RAM or more and at least 50GB of available hard drive space.  A more recent (2019 or newer) computer with an i5 or better processor is also recommended.

Original macOS 13 Ventura advisory sent on September 27, 2022:

Apple is expected to release macOS 13 (Ventura) in October. At this time, ITS recommends against upgrading to macOS 13 (Ventura).

macOS Ventura is a major update to the macOS operating system, taking it from version 12 to version 13. As has been experienced with previous major updates, there is a possibility that applications, especially older applications, may not be immediately compatible upon release of Ventura.

Until Ventura is released, ITS will not be able to fully test to see which applications are not compatible. This notice will be updated as more information becomes available.

To prevent your macOS from updating to Ventura automatically, please do the following:

  1. Go to the Apple menu and select "System Preferences"
  2. Click on the "Software Update" icon
  3. Make sure the box for "Automatically keep my Mac up to date" is unchecked
  4. Click on the "Advanced" button
  5. Uncheck the box for "Install macOS updates"
  6. If desired, also uncheck the box for "Download new updates when available"
  7. Click "OK"
  8. Close the Software Update window

ITS generally recommends against immediately upgrading to the latest version of any operating system when it is first released, until compatibility with ITS supported software can be tested.
