Microsoft Office 2016/2019 End of Support Advisory (Dec 31 2:00 pm)

Microsoft Office 2016 & 2019 End of Support

Microsoft will soon end support for Microsoft Office 2016 and 2019. This means that Microsoft will no longer provide software updates, technical assistance, or security updates for these products. Refer to Microsoft's Office Lifecycle FAQ for more details.

As a result, ITS will be ending support for Microsoft Office 2016 and 2019 on September 30, 2025. ITS recommends that UH users with Microsoft Office 2016 or 2019 upgrade to a supported Microsoft Office license before this date.  Running an unsupported, unpatched software is a security risk to all users and devices on the UH network.

How do I check which version of Microsoft Office I have?

Windows:

  1. Open Microsoft Word

  2. Open a new or existing document

  3. Select File and then select Account

  4. Under Product Activated, if you see “2016” or “2019”, you will need to upgrade.

macOS:

  1. Open Microsoft Word

  2. On the macOS menu bar, select Word and select About Microsoft Word

  3. Next to License, if you see “2016” or “2019”, you will need to upgrade.

How do I upgrade to the latest version of Microsoft Office?

As of August 2025, the latest version of Microsoft Office offered by ITS Site Licensing is Office 2024 LTSC. For additional information and instructions for ordering, please visit the ITS Site Licensing website.

Note, ITS has observed certain retailers offering discounts on Microsoft Office 2021 licenses, however, as support for Microsoft Office 2021 is ending in October of 2026, ITS strongly recommends against upgrading to Office 2021 at this time. Please visit our separate ITS Alerts advisory for more information about next year’s Microsoft Office 2021 end of support.
