Undergraduate research is a key element in students learning and a crucial mean to get experience in the field of study. Students are encouraged to enroll in available projects conducted at Kapiolani Community College.

PROGRAM SUMMARY

The Kapi´olani Community College, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) programs, operating in the National Science Foundation TCUP program, invites applicants to apply for internships and peer mentorships that will support students who plan to transfer in general STEM disciplines.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens. Awards will be based on academic qualifications of the student.
The quality of the proposed objectives, an applicant resume of the intended project, and the availability of an Internship position. Interns and peer mentors are expected to work approximately fifteen hours a week on their assignments. Women, underrepresented minorities specifically Native Hawaiian, Filipino, other Pacific Islander, Native Americans, African Americans, and Hispanics are particularly encouraged to apply.

 

APPLICATION INFORMATION

I. TO BE PREPARED BY THE APPLICANT:


1.) Cover Page (Fully signed), included in this document.
2.) Application Letter: A one page letter that includes:
The applicant’s enthusiasm for and commitment to the program,
The intended position for which the applicants is applying
A summary of pertinent work experience,
Long-term employment objectives.
3.) Student’s Resume: A short (one-page or less) summary of the applicant’s career interests and accomplishments including any awards or honors that have been achieved.
4.) Student Academic Record: Please provide a record from myuh portal of courses you have taken in the system, and a record of courses you have taken elsewhere. Xeroxes are acceptable
5.) Letter of recommendation from a faculty member.

II. Renewal: Upon successful completion of a semester-long period of work, students may be rehired up to an additional two semesters.

IV. Participant Responsibilities
Position begins during spring or fall semester.
Submit work to Mrs. Keolani Noa via an electronic portfolio, at mid-term and at the end of the semester of funding. The eportfolio should include references to the participant’s research, and note, if applicable, presentations made, papers published, or relevant activities attended.

V. RESPONSIBILITES FOR PARTICIPANT OVERSIGHT
Upon successful completion of a period of work, the participant’s sponsor/host will be responsible for filling out a simple on-line form that tracks the participant’s progress, following the Spring, Summer, and/or Fall semesters. This last responsibility is especially important for the College’s annual report to the National Science Foundation.
