How can i support this program?

As you may know, Kapiolani Community College (The College), the second largest of ten public colleges in the University of Hawaii (UH) system, is a two-year college providing extensive and high quality liberal arts and career programs. The College bears the name of Queen Julia Kapiolani, who was deeply committed to the education, well-being and perpetuation of her people. The College looks to its Hawaiian roots, and to the Queen's motto, “Kulia i ka nuu,” — “To Reach for the Highest”. The College offers quality science education, with small classes and extensive interaction between students and faculty, and provides core classes with a broad academic base for students interested in transferring to four year colleges as STEM majors.

The goals of the STEM Program are:

  •   To strengthen and sustain the Kapi'olani Community College STEM infrastructure through faculty, curriculum, and technology development.
  •   To provide enhanced tutoring, peer mentoring and active learning opportunities for students.
  •   To create clear and efficient academic pathways to four-year institutions in Hawaii and to STEM careers.
  •   To provide undergraduate research opportunities for STEM students.

The College has recently opened a STEM center located on the 2 nd floor of the Kokio building. This new center affords a sense of place for our STEM students on campus, providing counseling, peer mentoring and tutoring services for our students. Beginning in the Fall of 2007, the College will offer a new Associates of Science degree in Natural Sciences with concentrations in Physical and Life Sciences to provide our STEM students a clear, obtainable academic goal. Many of our students are employed as undergraduate research interns and peer mentors who work closely with STEM faculty and students on projects of their mutual interest.

The STEM program has nearly 100 students enrolled and this number is climbing weekly. Approximately 75% of the College's STEM students are Hawaiian. In the summer of 2007, the STEM program will be offering two summer bridge programs for high school juniors and seniors, to ease the transition to college and to help the student revisit their math and science skills in preparation for college. In order to pay the expenses of the summer bridge programs, as well as other STEM program costs, we are seeking additional support from our colleagues in industry and community partners with an interest in STEM. A monetary contribution would be greatly appreciated and will maintain the vitality and scientific excellence that is a hallmark of the KapCC STEM program. I hope that you will be able to assist us by supporting this important program. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at (808) 734-9433 or at jrand@hawaii.edu . Thank you for your time and consideration.

    Sincerely,

    John D. Rand, PhD
    STEM Program Director
