By Kishida Rio
Directed by Colleen Lanki, UHM alumna and guest director
Thread Hell is playwright and director Kishida Rio's masterpiece of the Japanese avant-garde, or angura, movement. Poetic language and dark imagery weave a tale of female identity and give voice to the women in the textile mills, spinning thread and reinventing their personal histories in opposition to the strings that hold them in place. This award-winning play will be directed by Colleen Lanki, Artistic Director of TomoeArts, based in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Thread Hell is supported in part by grants from The Office of the Chancellor, University of Hawai`i at Manoa; Center for Japanese Studies, UH Manoa; Norma Bird Nichols, Phd Asian Theatre Endowment Fund; The National Resource Center East Asia, UHM; Consulate General of Japan in Honolulu
