IMMEDIATE RELEASE
TAMARA HUNT DIRECTS A LOCAL VERSION OF A TOUCHING FAMILY FANTASY
The University of Hawai'i
at Manoa's Department of Theatre and Dance presents a astronomical
fantasy by Julian Wiles. Director Tamara Hunt kicks off the Kennedy
Theatre Mainstage Series with "The Boy Who Stole the Stars,"
a play about love, friendship and family, featuring a giant dragon
puppet made of stars. "The Boy Who Stole the Stars" will
be
performed September 20, 21 and 28 at 8pm and 29 at 2 pm. Opening
night audiences are invited to enjoy a stargazing party on the Kennedy
Theatre lawn following the performance.
This show follows the
story of a boy, Nicholas (Kevin Pacheco/Jeremy Pippin), on a summer
visit with his grandparents. The boy and his friend Genevieve (Noelle
Poole) compete in a science project: she is to count all the frogs
in the pond and he is to count all the stars in the sky. His project
proves difficult so he enlists the help of his grandfather (James
Davenport/Matthew Malliski). As they explore the onderment of the
night sky, stars and constellations, his grandfather tells him the
story of a mighty star dragon. If one should battle the dragon and
return the stars to the earth, there would be no death. The boy
sets out to battle the dragon so he can keep his grandfather with
him always. This show moves the whole family, especially ages 7-12.
Hunt was inspired to
do the play after researching Astronomy with the UHM Leisure Center
and other local astronomy groups. The opening night stargazing party
on the Kennedy Theatre lawn following the performance is given by
Stargazers of Hawai'i. James Davenport designed the set for this
magical world as his MFA thesis project. Multiple Po'okela honoree
Sandra Finney designed the costumes for the show.
