IMMEDIATE RELEASE

UHM’S KENNEDY THEATRE CELEBRATES THE CENTENNIAL OF KOREAN IMMIGRATION TO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!

The University of Hawai‘i at M?noa’s Department of Theatre and Dance presents “Dance Korea” as its 2003 Annual Dance Concert. “Dance Korea!” is a celebration of the centennial of Korean immigration to the United States. “Dance Korea!” will be presented on the Kennedy Theatre Mainstage February 14, 15, 21, and 22 at 8pm and February 16 and 23 at 2pm.

“Dance Korea!” will feature the choreography of contemporary Korean choreographer Jeong Ho Nam, one of the pre-eminent modern dancers working in Asia today. Ten of her Korean dance students from Korea National University of the Arts will join UHM dancers in a performance of her work entitled “Wanderers.” The concert will also include a world premiere piece choreographed by Nam for UHM dancers, and a piece to be performed only by her Korean students. The music for these dances will feature contemporary Korean composers. The program will conclude with a rousing finale based on traditional Korean drum dances choreographed by local Korean dance expert Mary Jo Freshley.

This unique residency includes not only the performances at Kennedy Theatre but also culminate with an intensive week-long student choreography workshop after the performances. The workshop will conclude with an informal showing of new works at Kapiolani Community College on Saturday, March 1, 2003.

Funding for this performance is made possible by The Asian Cultural Council in New York; the Center for Korean Studies, the Honors Program and the College of Arts and Humanities of the University of Hawai‘i at M?noa; the Centennial Committee of Korean Immigration to the United States; and Korea National University of the Arts.
