IMMEDIATE RELEASE

KENNEDY THEATRE PRESENTS “FALL FOOTHOLDS I: DANCING VOICES”

The University of Hawai'i at Manoa's Department of Theatre and Dance presents "Footholds I: Dancing Voices", a dance concert directed and choreographed by MFA candidates Melissa Teodoro and Ana Paula Höfling. "Dancing Voices" is part of the Kennedy Theatre Prime Time Season and will be performed November 13 through November 16 at 8pm and on November 17 at 2pm in Kennedy's Earle Ernst Lab Theatre.

"Dancing Voices" displays a collection of seven dance pieces-- emphasizing both the theatrical and the physical aspects of contemporary dance. All dance pieces were choreographed by Teodoro and Höfling during their MFA studies at the University of Hawai'i.

The most distinguishing feature in Höfling's piece, "The Smallest Unit of Meaning," is the use of spoken voice as music. Five years ago, with this project in mind, Teodoro recorded stories told in several Asian languages, and these stories are part of the score used to create this quartet about group membership and identity.

Teodoro's thesis piece, "No Más," takes a close look at war and violence, and emphasizes the atrocities of the ongoing war in Colombia, her home country. As part of the creative process, both Teodoro and her dancers have done research on the issue of kidnaping and torture.

Both MFA candidates are from South America and share very similar backgrounds. They have both been honored as Fulbright Scholars and both have taught at respected dance institutions in Colombia and the U.S. Teodoro met Höfling at UCLA where they were both studying Dance Ethnology. They connected as a creative team and decided to travel to Hawai'i to further their graduate studies in Choreography. Höfling brings to this dance duo her expertise from studying at University of California at Berkeley and experience as a dance teacher at universities in Florida and Colombia. Before coming to Hawai'i, Teodoro directed the student dance company and taught dance at the Universidad Javeriana in Colombia. They both have participated as performers with the local performance group Monkey and the Waterfall and have taught in the community.

"Footholds II" and "Footholds III" will present even more opportunities for dance in the Earle Ernst Lab Theatre in the spring. "Footholds II: Young Choreographers on Stage" will present its annual showcase of student dancers and choreographers. MFA Dance candidate Jennifer Butler will deliver a dance concert based on the simple building blocks of dance in the Earle Ernst Lab Theatre during "Footholds III: Fly High Fall Silently," replacing the previously scheduled “A Night at the Catwalk Club.”

Tickets for "Fall Footholds I: Dancing Voices" will go on sale Tuesday, November 12 at the Kennedy Theatre Box Office. Tickets may be purchased in person or charged-by-phone at the Kennedy Theatre Box office Monday through Friday from 10am to 3pm.
