IMMEDIATE RELEASE
UHM KENNEDY
THEATRE’S LAB THEATRE DELVES INTO VIOLENT WORLD OF HORROR
COMIC BOOK FANTASY WITH “DARKWEED” THIS JANUARY
The University of Hawai'i
at Manoa's Department of Theatre and Dance presents “Darkweed,"
an original play by MFA candidate Deborah Poage in partial completion
of a MFA in playwrighting. This play is a theatrical venture into
the realm of horror comic book fantasy. “Darkweed” will
be directed by Sammie Choy, and will be presented in the Earle Ernst
Lab Theatre January 29, 30, 31 and February 1 at 8pm and February
2 at 2pm. A post show rap will follow the Friday night performance.
The main character Fred
(played by Chris Doi), an aspiring teenage horror comic book creator,
falls victim to his own prized creation Darkweed (Jonathan Dwight
Shigeo Egged). He releases the frustration he feels with the hypocrisy
of the world through his stories. His particular targets include
his school counselor and her husband (Alexandria Baldwin and Gilbert
Molina), his brother (Terry Allen), and his brother’s girlfriends
(Cindy Beth Davis and Jessica Behner). Fred creates situations where
Darkweed destroys his adversaries by revealing the truth about them
and convincing them to destroy each other or themselves. Feeling
powerless in his real-life experience, Fred delves deeper into the
comfortable world of his creative fantasies until the boundaries
between Fred’s reality and fantasy are blurred, and tragedy
ensues.
Choy was a professional
actor in the San Francisco area before she returned to Hawai‘i
to pursue an MFA in directing. Her previous directing endeavor at
UHM’s Kennedy Theatre was last Spring’s Late Night production
of the post September 11 anthology “What Keeps Me Here.”
Poage has her Bachelor
of Arts degrees in Music and Philosophy, from UHM. She has written
screenplays as well as stage plays and was the assistant director
for Kennedy Theatre’s epic “Faust II” and “Master
and Margarita.” Poage is currently developing the continuing
adventures of Darkweed and Fred in graphic novel format.
