UHM KENNEDY
THEATRE PRESENTS “FOOTHOLDS II: YOUNG CHOREOGRAPHERS ON STAGE”
The University of Hawai‘i
at Manoa’s Department of Theatre and Dance presents its annual
dance student showcase “Footholds II: Young Choreographers
on Stage.” This year’s performance features new choreography
from some of the budding choreographers of the UHM dance program.
“Footholds II” is part of the Kennedy Theatre Prime
Time Season and will be performed Wednesday, April 2 through Saturday,
April 5 at 8pm and on Sunday, April 6 at 2pm in Kennedy's Earle
Ernst Lab Theatre.
Bachelor of Fine Arts
degree candidate Traci Chun, a graduate of Mid-Pacific Institute,
will present a dance piece that was inspired by the choreographer’s
reflection on the positive and negative forces in people’s
personal and social lives. The resulting dance displays contrasts
in movement styles and dynamics. Chun was a founding member of the
UH Dance Ensemble and has performed at venues throughout Oahu including
the Blaisdell Center, Leeward Community College, Honolulu Academy
of Arts and the Contemporary Museum.
The line up will also
feature diverse offerings from student dancers and choreographers
with unique backgrounds. Colleen Murphy, UHM graduate student and
tap dance instructor for Outreach College will be performing a fast-paced
tap number. Asian and Pacific dance forms will also be included
in the concert. There will be a post show rap to ask questions of
the choreographers and dancers following the performance on April
4.
“Footholds II:
Young Choreographers on Stage” sets the tone for the final
“Footholds” May 7-11. Jennifer Butler, MFA Candidate
in Dance, will be choreographing an entire night of dance in “Footholds
III: Fly High, Fall Silently.” (Replacing “A Night at
the Catwalk Club”) The first half of the program will include
performances of modern dance, capoeira and comic dance. In the second
half she will present her multi-media piece, “Question of
Water,” as partial fulfillment of her MFA and in celebration
of the United Nation’s International Year of Fresh Water.
