IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HAWAI'I PREMIERE OF "ARABIAN NIGHT" - LATE NIGHT SERIES FINALE

The University of Hawai'i at M~noa's Department of Theatre and Dance presents "Arabian Night" as the final production of Kennedy Theatreís 2004-05 Late Night Series. Written by German playwright Roland Schimmelpfennig, "Arabian Night" is a haunting drama of heat-induced desire where fantasy and reality mingle. Translated into English by David Tushingham, "Arabian Night" makes its Hawai'i debut under the direction of UHM graduate directing student Peter Ruocco. "Arabian Night" will be performed at Kennedy Theatreís Earle Ernst Lab Theatre on April 23, 29, 30 at 11 p.m., and on April 24 in an 8 p.m. "matin-eve" performance. A post-show chat with the director and actors will follow the Friday, April 29 performance. Recommended for mature audiences.

"Arabian Night" begins in an apartment building on a hot summer night, as the building's tenants and landlord struggle with a leaky pipe, a non-functional elevator and other everyday occurrences. But as the summer heat grows more and more intense, the neighbors find the line between reality and delirium beginning to blur. Mundane events blossom into surreal and erotic adventures, characters' lives collide - unleashing the imagination.

Director Ruocco describes the play as "a beautiful rendition of the interconnectedness of our lives," and was particularly drawn to Schimmelpfennig's unique writing style. In "Arabian Night, characters narrate their actions and thoughts directly to the audience. This theatrical device, Ruocco notes, helps the audience to "make the journey into the fantastic... ...Schimmelpfennig makes manifest a world in which we see the interaction of the characters' bodies, thoughts and emotions." An ensemble of five actors will perform the play on a bare stage, allowing the actors and the text to suggest time and place.

Ruocco is an MFA candidate in directing at the University of Hawai'i at M~noa. He earned his BA in Theatre from the University of Alaska and has directed and acted in plays for New York City's American Place Theatre and Juneau's Perseverance Theatre. "Arabian Night" marks Ruocco's directing debut at Kennedy Theatre.

Tickets for "Arabian Night" go on sale one hour before each performance at the door of the Earle Ernst Lab Theatre. Ticket prices are $8 general, $7 seniors, military, non-UHM students, and UH faculty/staff, and $3 UHM students with validated Spring 2005 student ID. Latecomers will not be admitted once the performance has begun. For more information, including disability access, call the Kennedy Theatre Box Office at 956-7655 (voice/text).
