Kennedy Theatre Media Release Department of
Theatre and Dance Contact: Jessica
L. Jacob, Publicity Director August
23, 2004 "FALL FOOTHOLDS I" SHOWCASE OF DANCE The University of Hawai‘i at M~noa’s
Department of Theatre and Dance presents "Fall Footholds I," an eclectic dance
exhibition of UHM graduate student and dance faculty choreography all performed
by UH students. This popular dance concert features diverse works that speak to
our global community and the desire to communicate through movement. "Fall
Footholds I" will be performed October 6, 7, 8, 9 at 8 p.m. and October 10 at 2
p.m. in the Kennedy Theatre Earle Ernst Lab Theatre. A post-show rap follows the
performance on Friday, October 8.
The program begins with works by UHM graduate
students in dance. Sonja Hinz will perform in her own composition entitled "Kereshmeh"
which translates from Farsi to English as "charisma." Her piece is backed by a
contemporary musical composition that uses both traditional Iranian and modern
Western instrumentation. From graduate student Rosie Summers, there will be a
piece called "Shani’s Duet" that incorporates sign language. Dancers Summers and
Polly Stewart will be accompanied by live music performed by Andrew Valentine
and Shintaro Yana.
A "Footholds" favorite, Izumi Sato, will command
the stage with another traditional Bharatanatyam dance from India. This year she
will perform "Bho Shambo," a Hindu prayer for the Lord of the Dance. Nicole
Pouliot, a culmination of whose M.F.A. work will be showcased in "Spring
Footholds: Moving Images" in the spring of 2005, will premiere new solo
choreography titled "Cosmo Quiz #67." Michael Pili Pang and UHM dance alumna,
Noelani Goldstein, will perform Pang’s choreography to "Lightening in the Sky."
The second part of the program will feature the
UH Dance Ensemble, a group that performs in the community to diverse audiences
throughout the season. "Fall Footholds I" will include pieces from this season’s
repertory including hula, Bharatanatyam, and works choreographed for the
ensemble by Marissa Glorioso, Gregg Lizenbery and Betsy Fisher.
