Kennedy Theatre Media Release Department of
Theatre and Dance Contact: Jessica
L. Jacob, Publicity Director October 20, 2004 "FALL FOOTHOLDS II: YOU ARE THE MIRROR" FEATURING WAYLES E.S. HAYNES The University of Hawai'i at M~noa's
Department of Theatre and Dance presents the world premiere of "Fall Footholds II: You are the
Mirror," a dance concert of choreography created exclusively by M.F.A. Dance
candidate Wayles E. S. Haynes. "You are the Mirror" is a reflection of Haynes’
experiences in Hawai’i as well as her lifelong love of dance and is expressed in
tap, contemporary ballet and modern dance. "Fall Footholds II: You are the
Mirror" will be performed November 17, 18, 19, 20 at 8 p.m. and November 21 at 2
p.m. in the Kennedy Theatre Earle Ernst Lab Theatre. A post-show rap follows the
performance on Friday, November 19.
In a representative piece from the concert, entitled "The Mirror,"
choreography by Haynes was influenced by the tumultuous world events of 2004.
According to Haynes, the piece has become an "exploration of tension in
relationships," and asks the question, "How much stress can a system take before
it breaks?" An ensemble of eight dancers will perform "The Mirror,"
investigating these ideas and "pushing the boundaries of trust" with a sweeping
style characterized by catch and release.
Another featured work is "Audience Sit-study," inspired by the idea of being
an audience member during a performance. In her choreography, Haynes transforms
mundane acts to the level of the fantastic by abstracting the shared experiences
of audience boredom, amusement, fascination, and more. Additionally, Haynes
questions through dance "socially unacceptable behavior with no consequences"
She hopes to engage the audience with delightful and surprisingly relevant
reflections of their own experience as watcher.
Haynes will also perform two of her solo works. "The Blame Game" explores
through modern dance the more contemporary and politically charged concepts of
assigning blame and accepting responsibility. First premiered during 2004
"Spring Footholds," "Fiesta Mo-jo" is a tap dancing piece set to the music of
Dizzy Gillespie. Light-hearted and sometimes flirtatious, it is an exercise in
complicated rhythms that recall the smooth tapping style of the golden era of
movie musicals. Other recent performances by Haynes include "Prada not Chanel"
created by Jennifer Butler for Convergence Dance Theatre’s "Our Consuming
Culture," and "Tapology" in UHM’s 2004 "Art, Music and Dance Fest!" a duet of
tap and string bass choreographed by Peggy Gaither Adams.
