Kennedy Theatre Media Release Department of
Theatre and Dance Contact: Jessica
L. Jacob, Publicity Director September 13, 2004 LATE NIGHT SERIES "THIS IS MY HOUSE" WORLD
PREMIERE ABOUT FAMILY The University of Hawai'i at M~noa's
Department of Theatre and Dance presents the world premiere of "This Is My
House," an innovative performance piece that explores the idea of family in our
changing world. Part of Late Night Theatre's 2004-2005 season, "This Is My
House" was conceived and written by UHM graduate students Carolyn Covalt and
Jennifer Bolieu, and is directed by Bolieu. "This Is My House" performs at the
Earle Ernst Lab Theatre on October 30, November 5 and 6 at 11 p.m., and October
31 in an 8 p.m. "matin-eve" performance. A post-show discussion with the cast
and creative team will follow the Friday, November 5 performance.
"This Is My House" delves into the complex
structures and definitions of family in today's society, using a variety of
perspectives to examine such issues as marriage, childbearing and genetics. It
is by turns comic and serious, introspective and confrontational. Covalt and
Bolieu developed their script out of a series of interviews and discussions with
members of the community. A small ensemble of actors re-constructs their words into
monologues, dialogues, vignettes and movement pieces. The creators describe
their work as similar to "a stained glass window -- there are many different
elements if you look very closely, but when you step back to look at the whole,
it creates one connected work of art."
Carolyn Covalt is an M.F.A. candidate in Asian
performance at U.H.M., a versatile actor and scholar of Japanese theatre. No
stranger to the unique collaborative style of "This Is My House," Covalt
participated in two similarly created productions while pursuing an M.A. in
performance studies at the University of North Carolina. Jennifer Bolieu is an
award-winning director, designer and actor who has directed plays for California
Lutheran University and the American Musical Theatre Ensemble. Currently working
towards an M.F.A. in directing at U.H.M., Bolieu staged the critically acclaimed
"The Most Massive Woman Wins" for Late Night Theatre's 2003-2004 season.
