Dance 2000 will be a celebration of millennial madness which looks back to creation mythologies and forward into the future. Featured choreography includes work by Kumu Hula Vicky Holt Takamine and a new piece by faculty member Betsy Fisher as well as a traditional Okinawan dance by dance ethnology student Chiaki Kise. Guest choreographers include modern dance pioneer Jean Erdman and Erik Stern, co-artistic director of the innovative "Dr. Schaffer and Mr. Stern" ensemble.

A concert that promises to look at what is new, bold and exciting about dance on the Rim of the Pacific. Kei Takei and UHM dancers will revive Takei's acclaimed "Nakaniwa" - " Time Diary" - a fifty-minute long piece originally produced in New York in 1996. Additional pieces include modern hula by Noenoelani Zuttermeister, Peter Rockford-Espirtu of Tau Dance Theatre, and "Transit," a new piece by UH Department of Theatre and Dance Professor Betsy Fisher.

*1994-1995 Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor
[Mainstage]

A highlight of this year's gala is the re-creation of one of this century's choreographic masterpieces, Doris Humphrey's classic work Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor, set to Bach's famous score. Betty Jones and Fritz Ludin of Dances We Dance will oversee the re-creation which is being staged to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Humphrey's birth. Also the program will be a new work by Daniel Shapiro and Joanie Smith of the Shapiro and Smith Dance Company from New York, as well as new works by UHM faculty members.

The Shapiro and Smith project is supported by the Western States Federation and The State Foundation on Culture and The Arts.
