The Pre-Professional Option is for undergraduates or college graduates who are interested in Athletic Training as a career. The option is designed as a pathway for admission into the CAATE Accredited Entry-Level Graduate Athletic Training Education Program. The Pre-Professional Requirements may be completed at any 4-year college/or at UH in the Pre-Professional Option. For Freshmen or Transfer Students
The Pre-Professional Option is for undergraduates who:

Have an interest in Athletic Training as a career

Have an interest in Health Care professions
-
Are current or potential Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Science majors
For College Graduates
The Pre-Professional Option is for college graduates who:

Have not completed the required pre-requisites
-
Do not have the required 3.0 GPA
-
Have poor performance in required pre-requisite courses or overall low GPA
-
Have limited clinical experience
-
Have weak recommendations from letter-writers
-
Want to establish residency status for in-state tuition (see Residency Declaration Form)

Have potential for success in the Professional Education Program
Requirements
If the Pre-Professional Option is to be completed at UH, students must

Be admitted to the Department of Kinesiology & Rehabilitation Science either as an undergraduate or as a conditional (unclassified) graduate student

Complete the Pre-Professional Option Course Requirements (see below) at any 4-year college/university. At minimum, the applicant needs to demonstrate above average academic performance (B average or its equivalent) for undergraduate course work, Professional Education Program pre-requisites, and for any post-bachelor or graduate course work.

Complete additional Health Care-related coursework to improve GPA

Complete at least 100 hours/semester of volunteer/ observation experience in a traditional Athletic Training setting (College/University or High School Athletic Training Clinic) for a total of ~200 hours. Students may register for KRS 699 Directed Reading if course credits are needed for observation experience.

Students may complete as much of the Pre-Professional Option at UH as needed to meet the admission requirements. Students may begin the Pre-Professional Option whenever they choose, but requirements must be completed or in-progress before the Priority Admission deadline.

Applications for the Professional Education Program must be received by February 15 for Priority Admission
Pre-Professional Course Requirements
The following are the Pre-Requisite courses or equivalent (300 level or higher, except for Weight Training and Psychology):

PHYL 302/L Human Anatomy & Physiology II with Lab
KLS 353 Structural Kinesiology
KLS 354/L Exercise and Sport Physiology with Lab
KLS 432 Emergency Care for Professional Rescuer

CPR/ AED for Professional Rescuer current card
The following courses should be completed before Admission to the Professional Education Program:

PSY 100 Survey of Psychology
KLS 152 Weight Training
KLS 395 Personal Health & Wellness
KLS 463 Sport Biomechanics
KLS 460 Nutrition & Exercise in Sport

KRS 489 Program Design in Strength Training & Conditioning
KRS 601 Physiology of Exercise
KRS 399 Directed Study (class credit for observation hours), register for Dr. Cleary's section
PHRM 203 General Pharmacology (offered at Kapioloani Community College)

Pre-Professional Option Advising Form
Volunteer/ Observation Experience Requirements
To volunteer in a local Athletic Training Clinic, students must submit the following to the Pre-Professional Advisor for review and to Program Director for Approval:

Cover letter addressed to the Head Athletic Trainer describing your background and professional goals, why you are interested in Athletic Training, and how you can contribute to the operation of the Athletic Training Clinic.

Current resume emphasizing clinical experiences and listing your CPR/AED and Blood Borne Pathogens training dates. See our Graduates website for examples of Athletic Training-related cover letters and resumes.

Health Clearance / Technical Standards / Immunizations / Health Insurance Form, submit with Immunization records and copy of health insurance card, including TB clearance.

Copy of CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer card - must not expire during academic year. Training is held on campus every July, contact Program Director for information or go to the American Red Cross.

Copy of certificate from Blood Borne Pathogens initial training class- must not expire during academic year. Training is held on campus every July, contact Program Director for information or go to the initial Biosafety Training at: http://www.hawaii.edu/ehso/bio/training.htm. Include a copy of your certificate as part of your packet or a memo indicating your training date and certificate is pending.

Student Liability insurance is highly recommended. See Operational Policies Manual for suggested insurance carriers.

Submit the above together as a packet to the Pre-Professional Advisor for review and submit to Dr. Cleary for approval. She will forward to the Athletic Training staff for approval. Then you can contact your Supervising Athletic Trainer.

Students may begin the volunteer experience whenever they choose, however, to volunteer in the UH Athletic Training Clinic for observation hours; it is highly recommended students begin in August with the orientation in-service and pre-season football camp.
