Non-Kinesiology/Exercise Science undergraduates or college graduates interested in Athletic Training as a career may be need to complete the Pre-Athletic Training requirements. The Pre-Athletic Training Requirements may be completed at any 4-year college or university. The clinical hour requirement may be completed in any traditional Athletic Training setting under the direct supervision of an Athletic Trainer.
Pre-Athletic Training Requirements are for:
Undergraduates who:

Have an interest in Athletic Training as a career
-
Are current Kinesiology/Exercise Science majors
-
Are majoring in an unrelated field
College graduates who:
-
Have an undergraduate degree unrelated to Kinesiology/Exercise Science
-
Have not completed the required pre-requisites
-
Do not have the required 3.0 GPA
-
Have poor performance in required pre-requisite courses or overall low GPA
-
Have limited clinical experience
-
Have weak recommendations from letter-writers
-
Have potential for success in the Professional Education Program
-
Missed the deadline for admission in odd years only
Pre-Athletic Training Requirements
The following are the Pre-Athletic Training courses or equivalent (300 level or higher, except for Weight Training and Psychology):
The following courses/equivalent MUST be completed at any four-year college or university before Admission to the EL-GATEP:

PHYL 301/L Human Anatomy & Physiology I with Lab
PHYL 302/L Human Anatomy & Physiology II with Lab
KRS 353 Structural Kinesiology
KRS 354/L Exercise and Sport Physiology with Lab
KRS 432 Emergency Care for Professional Rescuer
–OR–
CPR/ AED for Professional Rescuer current card
The following courses/equivalent should be completed at any four-year college or university before Admission to the EL-GATEP:

PSY 100 Survey of Psychology
KRS 152 Weight Training
KRS 395 Personal Health & Wellness
KRS 463 Sport Biomechanics
KRS 460 Nutrition & Exercise in Sport
It is the students' responsibility to check the KRS Course Descriptions to compare the applicability of the selected courses.
Observation / Volunteer Supervised Experience Requirements
Admission to the EL-GATEP requires ~200 hours observation/volunteer experience in a traditional Athletic Training setting (high school, college/university). All hours documented MUST be supervised by an AT.
To volunteer in a local Athletic Training Clinic in Honolulu, students must submit the following to the Program Director for review and approval:

Printed and signed Verification and Waiver Forms including the Pre-Athletic Training Student Requirements Acknowledgement Form in Appendix D of the Operational Policies Manual

Cover letter addressed to the Head Athletic Trainer describing your background and professional goals, why you are interested in Athletic Training, and how you can contribute to the operation of the Athletic Training Clinic.

Current resume emphasizing clinical experiences and listing your CPR/AED and Blood Borne Pathogens training dates. See our Graduates website for examples of Athletic Training-related cover letters and resumes.

Health Clearance / Technical Standards / Immunizations / Health Insurance Form, submit with Immunization records and copy of health insurance card, including TB clearance.

Copy of CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer card - must not expire during academic year. Training is held on campus every July/August, contact Program Director for information or go to the American Red Cross.

Copy of training certificate of OSHA Blood Borne Pathogens initial General Biological Safety training training class- must not expire during academic year. Contact Vanessa Capacio to schedule training or attend UH Orientation In-service in July (see below).

Student Liability insurance is required. The NATA recommends student coverage through www.HPSO.com.

Submit the above together as a packet to Dr. Cleary for review. She will forward to the Athletic Training staff for approval. Then you can contact your Supervising Athletic Trainer.

Students may begin the volunteer experience whenever they choose, however, to volunteer in the UH Athletic Training Clinic for observation hours; students must complete the UH Orientation In-Service in July and pre-season football camp in August. Contact Program Director for details.
