KOKUA Program - Equal Opportunity for Students with Disabilities at the University of Hawaii Manoa

Sign Language Interpreting

The KOKUA Program arranges for qualified American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreters and Captioners for students who are Deaf or hard-of-hearing that are registered with KOKUA.  This service is also available for campus events and for faculty and staff.

Request Process

Please submit a request to KOKUA by telephone at (808) 956-7612 or by email at kokua@hawaii.edu.  Please include in your request:  Day and date of event; start and end time; location; name of contact person; phone number and/or e-mail address of contact person; and billing information.  Early requests will be given priority, however we will do our best to locate an Interpreter.  There is no guarantee for requests received (7) weekdays prior to an event.

KOKUA will then assist by locating an available Interpreter for the event, will communicate event details to the Interpreter, and will assist with arranging for parking, furniture placement and related needs.

Please note that (2) Interpreters are requested for events that exceed (1) hour.
