Organization

Center programs are guided by three committees composed of faculty members of the University of Hawai‘i.

The Academic and Student Affairs Committee is responsible for developing balanced academic offerings related to Korea and suggesting additional programs to enhance Korean studies. The committee's activities include:

  • recommending new courses and curriculum changes;
  • evaluating instructional and research staff and resources;
  • screening applications for new faculty and visiting faculty positions in the Center; and
  • facilitating academic interchange via colloquia, academic exchanges, and organizational networks.

The Research Committee recommends general policies for individual and group research conducted under the auspices of the Center. It screens, evaluates, and makes recommendations on funding proposals for all conferences and research projects sponsored by the Center and administers the awarding of student scholarships and grants.

The Publications Committee sets the standards governing Center publications; seeks out and encourages the submission of scholarly works that meet such standards; and supervises the evaluation, editorial policy, and publication of the Center's journal, Korean Studies, a variety of books, and its newsletter published in cooperation with the Association for Asian Studies Committee on Korean Studies.

People

Faculty

With more than thirty faculty members offering courses and conducting research related to Korea, the Center has by far the greatest number of scholars of any department in the United States, and our resources for scholarship on Korea rank in the upper echelon of academic institutions throughout the world. Courses relating to Korea in fields such as Asian studies, dance, economics, history, language, linguistics, literature, music, political science, and sociology are regularly offered.

With its dedicated faculty and staff, and its many Korea-related activities, the Center for Korean Studies offers a rich opportunity for those interested in the study of Korea.
