“Hanak’o nŭn ŏpta” is a subtle but pointed critique of deep-rooted and undying male-centered gender assumptions and practices in post-modern Korean society. The main target of the short story is a coterie of young, college-educated, urban male professionals, who enjoy upper-middle-class bourgeois lifestyles and material amenities in the post-democratization era in contemporary Korea. Virtual global citizens, these male elites in their socializing with two female friends from their college years basically reproduce long-entrenched male-dominant gender consciousness and behavioral patterns. The group’s skewed views about gender relations reach a peak when they erupt into physical violence and harassment of their female colleagues during an outing in the remote countryside. To shirk and mask their responsibilities and collective guilt, they invent a code name, “Hanak’o,” and label one of the women with the moniker. The narrative’s startling clincher functions as a final and dramatic exposé of these men’s flawed perception and shabby treatment of their female associates. It is the revelation that Hanak’o and her friend are internationally known designers of chairs, active in the European furniture industry. These women’s professional success and empowerment represent an incontestable challenge to and subversion of the male characters’ stereotyped notions of womanhood and established categories of gender performance. Ultimately, “Hanak’o nŭn ŏpta” compellingly points out to the men in the narrative their anachronistic patriarchal gender views and enlightens them on their lack of gender literacy. At the same time, the story calls from feminist perspectives for a fundamental transformation of existing gender concepts and order in Korea in the ever-accelerating context of globalization at the end of the twentieth century.
