Writer Yun Chŏng-mo gained notoriety in South Korean national literature in the 1980s. Through her treatment of colonial sexual slavery, American military base prostitution, and sex tourism, she emerged as a representative writer in both the canons of South Korean national literature and women's writing. Works such as Nim (You, 1987) and Bitt (Light, 1991) took up the division of the peninsula and the Gwangju Uprising in fictional form. Likewise, Gulle (Bridle, 1994), Emi Ireum-eun Chosenbbi-yeoda (Your Mom’s Name Was Chosun Whore, 1997), Barambeok-ui Taldeul (Daughters of the Wall, 1981), Geu Tujang-i-wa Adeul (The Matchmaker and the Son, 1986), and Omeoni (Mother, 1985) dealt with female sexuality and questions of national identity. In particular, Gobbi-1 (Reins 1, 1988) was praised as a work that skillfully tackled questions of nation, sex, and gender. Gobbi-2 (Reins 2, 1993) was published five years later. However, the work is of lesser aesthetic quality and reveals the author's fragmented consciousness regarding sexuality. Therefore, this essay primarily discusses Gobbi-1.

Gobbi-1 is an autobiographical novel recognized for its portrayal of the author’s family history. The narrative centers on her mother's life as a prostitute and marriage to an American soldier, as well as the author's half-sister and American husband. Author Yun Chŏng-mo regards the work as a result of struggling with her own memories of the past, and as such, the work revolves around the question of how to interpret the lives of American military base prostitutes. However, the work ultimately understands the stories of military base prostitution as one of national suffering at the hands of foreign powers and reduced sexual exploitation to the level of the nation. Discussions in the 1990s over national ideology and sexual oppression brought about a revaluation of Yun Chŏng-mo's work. It was argued that the indivisible subject presented by the discourse of nationalism served to erase women, and Yun Chŏng-mo's works were criticized as repressive texts that reflected patriarchal masculine desire. For example, in Gobbi-1, Chŏngin’s husband, Han Sang-u (a social activist), emerges as an authoritative, enlightened figure who voices opposition to the exploitation of Korean women as prostitutes at the hands of foreign powers. The novel embodies an imperialistic masculinity typified by the dualism of enlightened male/unenlightened female. Through court testimony, diary entries, and analytic explanations, Han Sung-u is inserted into the novel as a didactic device functioning to fix the meanings of women's experiences and explains prostitution and exploitation through a narrative of national suffering and subjugation by a foreign power.

Consequently, this novel contains two possible readings. In the first reading, female prostitute Chŏngin meets Han Sang-u and becomes enlightened, recognizes that her life of prostitution is a result of foreign domination, and arrives at a new national consciousness. This narrative emerges through a direct and literal reading of the text. In the second reading, female prostitute Chŏngin meets and marries her savior and prince, establishes a life free from the patriarchal order, and forms a normal family. Such a reading does not exist on the surface of the text but is conveyed through the relationship of the two characters and explication of their personalities. In a patriarchal society, the lives of prostitutes are blamed on their strong sexual appetites and greed and are considered threats to the traditional values of hyŏnmo yangch'ŏ (wise mother, good wife). Women who break from the patriarchal order are considered witches, whereas submissive women are depicted as angels. Therefore, due to the conservative view of gender roles embedded in the novel, I conclude that Chŏngin's national consciousness in the end can only lead to a self-abnegating perspective which results in her becoming a highly idealized character within the novel. This is displayed through the completeness and perfection exhibited in Han Sung-u's personality and the split personalities of Chŏngin's mother and Min Ka-hyŏp’s mother, which oscillate between good and evil.

Yet, upon reading Yun Chŏng-mo's novels again, I am struck by the visceral experiences portrayed by the author and the straightforward nature in which the lives of lower-class women are illustrated. This aspect of the novel can be missed when read only for its ideological trappings. When the text is read free of any ideological framing, the text’s wider popularity can be understood as a result of the power of the lived experiences portrayed within the novel. The women in the novel are frank and candid. The women are determined and unwavering in their greed, selfishness, and expressions of sexuality. Although nationalist ideology often introduces slippages and interruptions into the narrative, I believe that such honest female characters are rare in South Korean women's literature and therefore should be appreciated and embraced.
