The Worldwide Consortium of Korean Studies Centers invites proposals from graduate students for papers to be presented at its Fifth International Workshop on Korean Studies. The workshop, on the theme “Korea Coping with Globalization,” will be held July 7–10, 2009, at the Center for Korean Studies, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, Honolulu, Hawai‘i, U.S.A.
The Worldwide Consortium of Korean Studies Centers workshops are designed to provide a forum for graduate students in Korean studies to share their research in a supportive and encouraging environment and to promote scholarly interest in Korea around the globe.
Participating graduate students will give presentations on topics of their choice related to the workshop theme in a series of thematically or methodologically coherent panels chaired by established academics drawn from the region and from Consortium member universities. These panels will be followed by workshops at which these academics will discuss the papers presented, commenting on disciplinary and methodological issues and recommending ways in which the papers can be improved for publication. General discussion will follow.
Twelve graduate students will be chosen through open competition to present papers. Twelve additional graduate students nominated by Consortium member universities also will be selected to participate. Any graduate student specializing in Korean studies, including those enrolled in non-Consortium institutions, may apply for an invitation to the workshop. Preference will be given to students enrolled in doctoral programs.
Graduate students from institutions outside Hawai‘i who are selected to take part in the workshop will be eligible for funding assistance. This assistance will cover accommodations and meals during the workshop, as well as a significant portion of travel expenses.
Applications must be submitted by May 15, 2009, and must include an abstract (in English or Korean) and a curriculum vitae (in English or Korean). The abstract should be no more than TWO pages (8.5 x 11 in., not A4), 11-point font, one-inch margins, single spaced. An optional additional page is permitted for data and references. Submissions are limited to one individual abstract per author. The curriculum vitae should not exceed three pages (8.5 x 11 in.).

Please send the files (MS Word only please, not hwp format) as attachments, rather than in the body of your e-mail message. In the body of your e-mail message, include name and affiliation, address, phone number, and e-mail address, followed by the paper title copied from the top of the first page of the abstract.
Use the following subject header for your e-mail: "WORLDWIDE, Last name, First name."
Selected students will be notified by June 1, 2009. Drafts of the completed papers must be submitted by June 15, 2009.
