Aloha, Grads and Friends, this is a call for 2008 ULSAA dues payments. Dues are $10 per year for state-resident grads, $1 per year for out-of-state resident grads, and $1 per year for non-graduate "friends" regardless of residency. Dues payment is strictly voluntary.

Cost is $125 per player, but if you send in your registration form by May 31st, it's only $105 per player. Don't have a three-person team? No problem. Single players welcome! We will gladly team you up with other players in the Junior Rainbow family. And if you're a 2004, 2005, 2006, or 2007 grad, email me for the special price of $50 per player.

This FREE dinner is open to all grads and non-grad Friends, and to their spouses/partners/boyfriends/girlfriends and children. All Lab School faculty and staff are also invited as honored guests of ULSAA. There is no charge for this dinner; it is FREE. If you would like to attend, please rsvp to me, lanning at hawaii dot edu , by Friday, June 27th with your name, the year you graduated -- Friends need not indicate a grad year -- and, if attending, the name of your spouse/partner/boyfriend/girlfriend and the names and ages of your children, if they will attend as well.

As in the past, we will have a variety of beverages and a heavy pupu assortment available, but please feel free to bring your beverage of choice and any food items you would like to share. Last year I did my three-beer-one-bean chili and some short ribs. This year, I'm not sure what I'll attempt. It's usually wandering through the supermarket the day before that gives me my ideas for what to make. Thanks to Caitilin Embree '58, we have a growing ULSAA collection of big spoons, tongs, and various other serving untensils, but please bring something to serve up your inspired recipes if you can.

I donated my car to ULSAA last year through Kokua in Kind on Paiea St, out by the airport. This is actually the fourth car in a row my family has donated there. It's a very easy process. Happily, this brought in over $2000 for our alumni association endowment fund. Yes, I could have made more had I sold the car myself, and I certainly could have traded it in against a new car. But I wanted to do it this way. And it was nice to get the tax deduction. If you ever decide you want to donate your car (or your truck, motorcycle, moped, sailboat, or jet ski, believe it or not) to ULSAA, just designate the University Lab School Alumni Association. • Here's an interesting offer from Abe Lee '66 regarding real estate pre-licensing classes he offers. Abe says:
  I recommend that anyone who wants to buy or sell a house take a real estate pre-licensing course so that they can be educated about the real estate transaction process. If anyone takes a prelicensing class from me and uses my real estate company to buy or sell real estate, I will refund them the school tuition. I cover topics such as: tenancies, real estate law, fair housing, agency, contracts, disclosures, financing, escrow, title insurance, condominiums, subdivisions, timeshare, property management, landlord tenant code, etc. The 60 hours of classes can be done in a live class or by independent study. The student does not have to take the school test if they do not intend to take the state licensing exam.

  If the students do decide to get a real estate license, they have to pass my school exam and pass the state exam. Once the students pass the state exam, they have several choices:

  1. Go on inactive status which means that they cannot participate in any real estate licensing activity and cannot get paid a commission or referral fees. I do not recommend this.

  2. Go to a referral company and get paid a referral fee of 20% commissions for every person that they refer to us that ends up in a closed transaction. The students can keep their full time jobs and make extra money. They do nothing in the transaction but they get paid for a referral.

  3. They can join a real estate company and go part time or full time and be actively engaged in the real estate business and make full commissions rather than the 20% referral fee.

  I am a strong proponent of educating the public in real estate because it is the biggest investment that they will make in their lives and they go into a transaction without any training or education. The class will help them to understand the process and make them a better consumer.

  I offer 18 continuing education classes for real estate agents. If any of the alumni would like to take the classes, they can do so at no charge if they promise to use Abe Lee Realty in their real estate transactions.

  In order to take the state exam, they have to pass my school exam. I have a 98% passing rate for my school and a 67% passing rate for the state exam when they take the exam the first time. I have many students who take the state exam several times and they finally pass. If the student becomes a referral agent, the commitment is for as long as they have their license with my referral company. They can quit the referral company anytime that they want to. If the student does not get a license and wants to attend for the education, they only need to do one transaction with me or refer one client to me and I will reimburse their tuition upon the closing of the transaction.

  The website is www.abeleeseminars.com for a complete list of classes that I offer. The free classes are based on seat availability because this is a busy year for me for real estate licensees that need to renew their licenses.

• Sean O'Harrow '86 has escaped the UK and moved back to the US. He is now serving as Executive Director of the Figge Art Museum in Davenport IA. Welcome home, Sean.

  If you ever get to mythical "River City," please send me a photo of you in front of one of those small town "Welcome to River City" type signs. Oh, and be on the lookout for 76 trombones and stampeding marching bands. Constant vigilance, Sean. Constant vigilance : )

• Casey Awai '86 operates her own interior design and art gallery in Waimanalo. It's called Koa Blade Design & Gallery, and you can see some of what she has to offer here: http://koabladedesign.org . Casey is very interested in showing the art of other Junior Bows, so please get in touch with her if you have Hawaiian-style work that might fit in with the look and feel of her gallery.

• If you would like to come back and talk to current Lab School students about the "real world" of college and work, contact Bill Teter by email, or call him at 808.956.4925. This is not a "career day" format talk. This is more like, "Hey, I've been through what you're going through right here at the Lab School, and here's what it's been like since I graduated."

  Back when I did college and career counseling, many alumni including Heidi Rian ('66), Gabe Garduque ('71), Gerald Lau ('72), John Shigemura ('72), Nate Fujita ('73), Leighton Wong ('73), Carolyn Kaichi ('74), Ray DeVilla ('85), Maia Forman ('85), Ken Tano ('85), and Cathy Wall ('86) took the time to come and talk to UHS students. The impact is enormous; you can greatly uncloud their thoughts and help them understand much more clearly what college and work are all about. There is nothing better than people who have lived the University High experience talking to students who are living it right now. The students listen very closely to UHS grads because grads have that extra credibility of having escaped from, er, I mean, uh, come from the same "family" : ) These students are a step away from breaking out, so you don't have to sugar-coat anything either. Feel free to tell them all about the good, the bad, the ugly, and the beautiful. They need to hear all of that. Please get in touch with Bill if you can give some of your time back to the family.

REUNIONS

• Class of 1978 has a reunion coming up fast:
  The Class of 1978 will have a two-part reunion on July 5th and 6th. They will be attending the annual alumni dinner on July 5th, 5:00 to 9:00 in the MPB, and they will have a grads-only lunch at Mike and Claire Muraoka's place on Sunday, July 6th, from 11:00 to 3:00. If you know any 1978 folks, please pass this info on to them and ask them to get in touch with Mike to let him know if they're coming to the Sunday lunch get-together. Even is they can't make the lunch, Mike is asking them to send him a short bio update.

  Class of '88! for those of you that didn't receive an email already, we are having our 20th reunion this year! We are celebrating with a dinner on Thursday night July 3rd (after the alumni golf tournament) and then we'll have another event at the school at noon on Sat July 5th (before the all-school reunion later that afternoon).
