I
Am not a poet.
I mean, I know that dope rhymes with mope and grope and slope.
But I can't
Write about soldiers or posers or the war in Iraq or love lost or the
cost of being yourself.
I can't
Write about the dance of the moon or the feel of his hair or getting
caught making moves
on a wave of perfume.
Cuz see while you were drowning in eyeliner, lamenting the finer things in
life while
wrapped in a thick cloak woven of the chosen words that spoke so
thoughtlessly
of you caressing a single message into a lovers thighs,
I was waiting at the bus stop to get to the mall
Thinking of limes and sea salt and of the math homework I didn't
finish and
whether I can fake it and wondering if it's butt naked or buck naked.
And while you were out pedaling Harlem in dreads and spinning raindrop
words of the
unspoken dead, smoking cigarettes outside of art galleries, listening
to the
beautiful melodies of Bob Marley,
I, instead, was sprawled on my living room floor, picking at the faded,
peeling paint,
watching the light flicker like a bad migrain, wondering this is all
there is to my
life, wondering if this is it, and also wondering why my carpet
smells like dog
shit.
So don't tell me that I have a story to tell.
Don't tell that to a teenager whose mind in occupied with dumbass shows
like Jackass
and Laguna Beach, whose ipods drown out the sound of the open street,
whose
eyes are glued to the screens of their playstation instead of
noticing that the
people around them are getting persecuted on bullshit condemnation.
But
I guess I could
Tell you about walking up a couple of blocks with my cousin to the Manoa
Parks to
watch the smoke curl around her ears as she tells me how she fears
that the only
reason she hasn't tried to die is because then no one will be able to
cradle her
drunken father as he reaches for another Bud Light to drown out the
nightmares
and hallucinations of his dead wife.
But then again,
I guess we're all overdramatic
At the age of ten.
So hey don't expect me to have anything to say
Because I am not smart enough, I am not brave enough, and I'm sure as hell
not stupid
enough
To put my heart out on the line and wrap it up all nicely with some cute
or sweet little
rhyme
And so I won't write about deaths and the moon and deep, heart-wrenching
love and the
sunset
Cuz I already said it and, man, I'm not even gonna try it cuz, see,
I
Am not a poet.
