
Habitat for Humanity Project (Saturday, July 1, 2006) - With the sun shining down on the Leeward coast, 25 alumni and friends joined Habitat for Humanity and the Sadamaru family in helping prepare their lot for their future home. The morning was spent clearing rocks, debris, and weeds from the lot. In the afternoon, the robust and enthusiastic crew poured 15 concrete footings that will support the main beams of the home. In addition to this work, a few alumni also assisted with carpentry work at a second site nearing completion. Second Annual Food & Winetasting Extravaganza (Friday, June 16, 2006) - With over 100 people in attendance, this year's Food & Winetasting Fundraiser was an unqualified success. With the assistance of alumnus Gordon Arakaki and Plaza Club manager Dulce Saunders, The Plaza Club was the perfect venue for downtown alumni and friends to relax and enjoy the tasty wine and food. A wide selection of wines were graciously provided by Southern Wine & Spirits of Hawaii, Gordon Arakaki, Michael Kido, and James Williston.
First Amendment in Crisis Symposium (Friday, February 24 - Saturday, February 25, 2006) successfully concluded its two-day program on Saturday, February 25. Members of the public, press, university and students heard special guests world reknown author Anthony Lewis (Gideon's Trumpet) and his wife Chief Justice Margaret Marshall, Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, as well as many other prominent mainland and local individuals speakers, including Dean Avi Soifer and Professor Jon Van Dyke. Mr. Lewis spoke at the sell-out dinner on Friday evening on "First But Not Absolute" and Chief Justice Marshall spoke at the Saturday luncheon on "Selling Judges Like a Can of Soup: the First Amendment and Judicial Independence." The entire program was filmed by 'Olelo and will be rebroadcast several times.
2006 Jurists-in-Residence Program (Monday, February 6 - Thursday, February 9, 2006) - This year's program was a huge success as U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony M. Kennedy returned for his 4th visit to our Law School along with Law School friend U.S. 8th Circuit Court of Appeals Senior Judge Myron H. Bright. The program, sponsored by the law firm of Case Lombardi & Pettit, included educational class sessions and receptions with our law students, a once-in-a-lifetime dialogue with Farrington and Kahuku High School students, a Hawai'i State Bar Association and Hawai'i Supreme Court co-sponsored program and reception with the jurists open to members of the Bar, a delightful lunch with international students from the East-West Center, and a memorable closing dinner at the Halekulani Hotel Ballroom. UH Law Review also held a Symposium in anticipation of Justice Kennedy's participation.
Breakfast With Our Alumni Legislators (Wednesday, February 1, 2006, State Capitol) - Faculty and administration met up with our alumni legislators for a morning full of interesting conversation and great food. Among the legislators scheduled to attend were Rep. Kirk Caldwell ('84), Sen. Carol Fukunaga ('76), Rep. Scott Nishimoto ('02), Rep. Blake Oshiro ('96), Rep. Maile Shimabukuro ('00), Rep. Cynthia Thielen ('78), Rep. Tommy Waters ('93), Sen. Paul Whalen ('91). In addition, we were delighted that Lt. Governor James "Duke" Aiona, Jr. ('81), and Della Au Belatti ('03) could join us. From the university, attendees include Acting President David McClain, Vice-Chancellor Neal Smatresk, Dean Soifer and CJ William S. Richardson.
