Professor Bowman joined this law faculty in 1975, and was the charter recipient of the Outstanding Professor of Law Award in 1983. He received Manoa's prestigious Robert W. Clopton Award for Distinguished Community Service in 1980. Upon the occasion of Professor Bowman's retirement from full-time teaching in 1997, August 22nd of that year was designated Addison M. Bowman Day by gubernatorial proclamation. In 2002 he was honored by the Society of American Law Teachers as a founding board member and "visionary activist for equality, access, and diversity throughout law and society."
Professor Bowman authored the Hawai`i Rules of Evidence Manual, published the Second Edition of that much-cited work in 1998, and issues yearly, pocket-part supplements for this book. He served as reporter to the Judicial Council Committee that produced the Hawai`i Rules of Evidence, and continues to serve as reporter to the Hawai`i Supreme Court's Standing Committee on the Rules of Evidence. He is currently an appellate mediator for the Hawai`i Supreme Court, and continues to conduct continuing legal education programs in the areas of evidence and professional responsibility law.
