James H. Pietsch

James Pietsch joined the law school in 1991 after teaching as an adjunct professor for several years. For the previous ten years he was the directing attorney of the Honolulu Elder Law Unit of the Legal Aid Society of Hawai`i.  In 1990 he received national recognition when he was presented the Paul Lichterman Award for outstanding achievement in the advancement of legal services for older persons. 

Professor Pietsch serves as the law school Pro Bono advisor, teaches Elder Law, Health Law and Bioethics and supervises the University of Hawai`i Elder Law Program (UHELP).  UHELP provides year-round direct legal services to socially and economically needy older persons.  Professor Pietsch holds a joint appointment at the John A. Burns School of Medicine.

University of Hawai`i at Manoa named Professor Pietsch the 2003 recipient of the Hung Wo and Elizabeth Lau Ching Foundation Award for Faculty Service to the Community.
