Professor Roth specializes in taxation, trusts and estates, nonprofit organizations, and professional responsibility.
He served as President of the Hawai`i State Bar Association in 1999, and prior to that was President of the Hawai`i Justice Foundation, Hawai`i Institute for Continuing Legal Education and Hawai`i Estate Planning Council. In 2003 he took a leave from the university to serve as senior policy advisor to Governor Linda Lingle during her first year in office.
Professor Roth has been a member of the faculty at three law schools and was named Professor of the Year at all three. During the spring of 1997 he was a visiting professor at the University of Chicago Law School.
He is an Academic Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and the recipient of numerous awards, including Civic Leader of the Year (twice) by Small Business Hawai`i; International Member of the Year by Lambda Alpha International (an honorary land economics society); and Communicator of the Year by the Hawai`i Chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators.
In 1998 Professor Roth received the prestigious Robert W. Clopton Award, University of Hawai`i's highest honor for service to the community; in 2000 he was included on the Honolulu Star-Bulletin's list of "100 individuals who had the biggest impact in Hawai`i during the 20th century"; and in 2005 the City of Honolulu's Centennial Committee included him on its list of "100 Who Made Lasting Contributions During Honolulu's First 100 Years."
Professor Roth has received the Hawai`i Press Club's Newsmaker Award (2004), Hawai`i Pacific University's Fellow of the Pacific Award (2004), and Grassroot Institute's George Washington Award for Civic Engagement (2006); and has given the commencement address at the University of Hawai`i (1994) and Hawai`i Pacific University (2004).
In 1992 and 1993 Professor Roth co-authored and edited a best-selling series of books, The Price of Paradise, which was later translated and published in Japan. From 1993 to 1998 he hosted a weekly live talk show on Hawaii Public Radio.
In 2006 Professor Roth and senior federal district court judge Samuel King wrote BROKEN TRUST: GREED MISMANAGEMENT & POLITICAL MANIPULATION AT AMERICA'S LARGEST CHARITABLE TRUST" (University of Hawai'i Press), which in 2007 received three awards from the Hawaii Book Publishers Association, including "Book of the Year." Professor Roth has also authored or co-authored a total of 13 continuing education manuals, served as editor-in-chief of the HICLE Encyclopedia of Financial and Estate Planning, and made more than 600 presentations to professional groups in 43 states.
