The Writing Center welcomes WSRSL students and faculty members who are interested in obtaining feedback on the writing process and written work. Please explore this site to learn more about The Writing Center and to take advantage of its offerings.

Purpose of the Writing Center

Welcome to the Writing Center at the William S. Richardson School of Law. The Writing Center's purpose is to provide law students and faculty members with feedback on the writing process and on written work. Students can make appointments to discuss questions while writing any paper. Topics covered may include the following:

-Researching strategically
-Overcoming writer's block
-Rewriting effectively
-Revising for specific audiences and purposes
-Writing more efficiently
-Organizing notes
-Organizing documents
-Mastering English for Legal Purposes
-Connecting legal substance to organization
-Connecting legal substance to precise syntax
-Finding an interesting paper topic
-Drafting a scholarly paper outline
-Using footnotes in scholarly writing

Location & Appointments

The Writing Center is located at the WSRSL on the University of Hawai'i at Manoa campus. The address is:

Room 202
Honolulu, Hawai'i 96822-2328

The Writing Center is open by appointment only - Monday through Friday at designated times between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.  The Writing Center is closed when the WSRSL is closed and during exams.  Clients sign up for appointments for conferences in the Writing Center appointment book located outside the Writing Center office, room 202.  Conferences are held in room 202.

Papers must be turned in at least twenty-four hours before the scheduled conference times. Papers and requests for appointments for Monday conferences should be turned in by the previous Friday.

Please note that some professors may restrict the use of The Writing Center during academic courses.  You, the writer, have the responsibility of obtaining permission from your professor to use The Writing Center.  The Writing Center will not be responsible for a student's use of the Center without a professor's permission.

The purpose of The Writing Center is to provide you with the resources and individual assistance to help you diagnose and remedy your own writing questions.  Senior Writing Associates function as intelligent readers, providing feedback and suggestions, but the written work remains your responsibility.

Senior Writing Associates cannot act as editors or substantive experts.  This means that they do not rewrite your project or correct your legal research or analysis.  Nor do they proofread or Bluebook your entire project.  However, they can assist you to edit, proofread, and Bluebook your own work.
