Welcome back to school everyone! The labor strike that shut down the University of Hawaii on Thursday, April 5, finally ended on Wednesday, April 18. We were able to resume classes on Thursday, April 19. It is a semester none of us will soon forget! Ke Kula Kanawai was not published during the strike. Next week's issue will be the last for the school year so send in your announcements now.

GRADUATION: Former State Attorney General Margery Bronster will be the featured speaker at the May 14 ceremony at Andrews Amphitheater. JON ZAHABY 3L will represent the graduating students and MICHELLE KIM 3L will serve as Mistress of Ceremonies.
 
Faculty
HAZEL BEH's article, Tort Liability for Intentional Acts of Family Members: Will Your Insurer Stand By You? has just been published in 68 Tenn. L. Rev. 1 (2000).
DAVID CALLIES was a speaker at the Rocky Mountain Land Use Institute's 10th Annual Land Use Conference recently in Denver. He participated in a panel entitled "Takings:An Update for Planners." PROF.CALLIES will also be speaking on "Legal and Policy Trends in Land Use Regulation" at the 9th Annual Advanced ALI-ABA program "Inverse Condemnation and Related Government Liability" in Seattle on May 4.
DANIELLE CONWAY-JONES will speak at the WSRSL Alumni Association's Spring Seminar Series on "Cyber Law and Policy" to be held at the law school on April 26.
CHRIS IIJIMA and ERIC YAMAMOTO led a plenary session at the Western Law Teachers of Color Conference in Los Angeles earlier this month exploring the intersections of Critical Race/Gender Legal Theory with other aspects of the law school curriculum. Also at that conference law students, SHELLIE PARK 2L, HOKULEI LINDSEY 1L, SONJA VALANT 2L, and ANNA VIDAD 2L, presented works in progress.
 
Students
The NATIVE AMERICAN MOOT COURT TEAM was pictured on the front page of the April 6 issue of Ku Lama "UH Law School Captures Third Consecutive Victory."
DAVID BREEMER 3L won the first annual National Association of Home Builders legal writing contest for his paper addressing the question of whether the Constitution requires compensation for landowners barred from developing land, purchased prior to enactment of environmental laws, on the ground that they should have foreseen the imposition of such restrictions. For his first place finish, David received $5,000 and an all-expense paid trip to San Francisco on April 21-23 to present his paper at a land use/environmental law conference sponsored by the Home Builders.

DAWN NAGATANI 2L, DUKE OISHI 1L, KIM TSUMOTO 2L and JASON WOLF 1L have been selected as this year's Kashiwagi Fellows. Each will receive a grant of $1,000 to support study in Japan this summer.

The Advocates for Public Interest Law announced this summer's APIL GRANT recipients: JOAN BIRD 1L, LAUREN CHUN 1L, RINA CHUNG 1L and VANESSA JANN-JORDAN 2L
NATHAN ROEHRIG 1L is the Second Annual ELS Summer Grant recipient. This summer Nathan will be paid to work at the public interest environmental job of his choice. The grant was raised from donations from the environmental community and from the hard work of ELS members.
The Student Golf Tournament was a success despite the rain and the strike! This year's winning team was GEORGE BURKE 2L, RYAN SHINSATO 2L, MYLES MATSUMOTO 2L, and DEAN HOE 2L with a net score of 53.
EMI MORITA 2L has joined the board of Hawaii Women Lawyers where she will serve as co-chair of the Projects Committee.
WAYNE WEIGHTMAN has returned to Cambodia and will be working with the firm he externed with currently known as the Cambodia World Law Group.
 
Alumni
JACK FRITZ '79 is one of the recipients of UH's 2001 Distinguished Alumni Awards. Jack is speaker of the Federated States of Micronesia Congress. He will be honored at a dinner on May 16 at the Sheraton Waikiki.
CHRISTOPHER "CJ" DUNCAN '00 has been accepted into Georgetown University Law Center's LLM program in International and Comparative Law starting in the Fall.
HELEN ZELDES'00 has joined the board of Hawaii Women Lawyers. She is currently serving as law clerk to Judge Dan Foley, ICA.
Watanabe Ing & Kawashima recently published an announcement of new associates - KRISTINE KANAKA '00, DAN OBUHANYCH '88 and new partner: TERRI KONDO '93.
Cades Schutte Fleming & Wright published an announcement that also included photographs of their newest associates and our alums: STACY KAWASAKI DJOU '97, DEAN UEHARA '00, and WILLIAM KEONI SHULTZ '00.
