The latest issue of MALAMALAMA, the university's magazine mailed twice a year to to 125,000 alumni, friends and supporters of UH, included several references to the law school. Our Environmental Law Program ranking is mentioned; DAVID CALLIES and KAREN GEBBIA-PINETTI are noted among faculty achievements; at least 8 of our alums are cited in alumni notes; and the entire inside last page is a messages as to why law school friends FRANK and JEAN BOAS made their planned gift to the law school.

The Asian Pacific American Law Teachers and Western Regional Law Teachers of Color Joint Conference was held this past June at Turtle Bay. ERIC YAMAMOTO and CHRIS IIJIMA coordinated this most successful event. Participants were enthusiastic about every aspect of the conference, including the strong cultural component.

The University of Mississippi Law Center News published a story on its Hawai'i summer program here at our law school. CASEY JARMAN is noted as having helped get the program started. In the past several years many of our own students have participated in the program.

Faculty

HAZEL BEH's latest insurance law article, "Tort Liability for Intentional Acts of Family Members: Will Your Insurer Stand By You?" will be published in the Tennessee Law Review. Insurance usually excludes coverage for intentional acts, but often victims file suits against parents and spouses or wrongdoers, claiming they were negligent. They therefore hope to avoid the intentional act exclusion. Case law is deeply divided on whether there is coverage for these claims.

DAVID CALLIES is the new co-editor (with spring Visiting Professor Dan Tarlock) of West Group's Annual Land Use and Environmental Law Review which publishes the best land use and environmental articles from the previous year. Prof. Callies also moderated an international panel on land development regulation at the combined annual meetings of the American Bar Association and the Law Society in London this past July. His book on US land use controls was published in Chinese, also in July.

KAREN GEBBIA-PINETTI's article entitled "Interpreting the Bankruptcy Code: An Empirical Study of the Supreme Court's Bankruptcy Decisions" is published in the spring 2000 issue of Chapman Law Review.

MARK LEVIN has been appointed by the State Supreme Court to a three-year term to the Committee on Certification of Court Interpreters. Honolulu Weekly (August 23 issue) reprinted a letter from Prof. Levin with his proposal for a three step process relating to tobacco advertising.

The National Law Journal (August 21 issue) publishing an article by DAVID CALLIES entitled "Odd Takins Case Is Not Precedent" regarding the recent US Court of Appeals decision Palm Beach Isles Associates v. U.S.

RANDY ROTH's son Walter has been receiving a lot of publicity lately. The 23 year old entrepreneur created a dot-com company "hotU" and just received $6 million in venture capital. www.hotU.com will provide college students, universities and businesses a central location to share scheduling and other class information throughout the country.

JOHN VAN DYKE just returned from Seoul where he presented a paper to the International Geographical Union on the "Impact of Islands On Maritime Boundary Delimitation."
