| Welcome to our newest Visiting Scholar, ASSOC.PROF. JENNY HUEI-YI SHYU from National Open University (fka Chung-Hsing University), Taipei, Taiwan, ROC. Professor Shyu writes in the areas of family law and women's issues. Her husband, Raymond Wang, is the head of Taiwan's office here in Honolulu. The law school is a co-sponsor of A PLACE AT THE TABLE, a community based program to be held on October 18, 20, 23 and 25, 7-9:30 p.m. at Jefferson Hall, East-West Center, and to be broadcast live each night on Channel 53 with simultaneous webcasts on www.olelo.org and www.honoluluadvertiser.com. The goals of the program are to: deepen our collective understanding of the inter-cultural exchanges that are occurring in Hawaii; create a discussion model that demonstrates good ways of discussing complex social questions; and explore new ideas for reducing injustice, intolerance and incivility. The topics of the four programs are: Hawai'i Women's Legal Foundation annual fundraiser is this Saturday, October 14 at the Royal Hawaiian. SHANLYN SOUZA '95 and VISITING STUDENT JOSH STANBRO are cast members of the production "Mayors, Matrimony, Mayhem." Another prominent member of the law school community is also scheduled to make an appearance on stage. The law school will have a table at the event. |

| The report of the Japan Federation of Bar Association delegation's successful visit last Spring to Hawai'i has recently been released and features prominently the law school. It specially thanks DEAN FOSTER, VISITING PROFESSOR TAKASHI MARUTA and PROF. MARK LEVIN among others. |

| JON VAN DYKE spoke at last week's Thursday Forum conducted by the East-West Center on "Understanding the Akaka Bill." His talk included a background of native rights in the U.S., history of the relationship between Native Hawai'ians and the U.S., the Rice v. Cayetano decision and its implications, and the content & importance of the Akaka Bill. ERIC YAMAMOTO moderated a panel of non-Hawaiians discussing their role in the Hawaiian self-determination movement recently. The Law School hosted the forum that focused on Rice vs. Cayetano and the current Akaka Bill. Speakers included PROF. CHRIS IIJIMA and CARRIE ANN SHIROTA '99. The Forum will be rebroadcast on Olelo on Oct. 7, Oct. 9, Oct. 12 and Oct. 19. DANIELLE CONWAY-JONES will be one of seven candidates in the upcoming election for Board of Directors of the UH Federal Credit Union. Three will be elected to the Board by the membership. |

| HONORA REMENGESAU (3L)'s brother, Tommy E. Remengesau, Jr., is currently the Vice President of Palau and is running for President. He was the front runner after the recent primary. HONORA is in Palau this semester on a Pacific/Asia Externship. SAT KHALSA 3L and student member of the Board of Regents, was just named to the 17 member Advisory Committee on the Selection of the President of the University of Hawai'i. KU LAMA, the UH Newsletter, just recently noted that our last year's CLIENT COUNSELING TEAM took top honors at the 2000 Regional ABA Client Counseling Competition in San Francisco. As a result of the win, UH will be hosting the regional competition here this February. UH has won 4 out of the last 5 regional competitions since 1996. |
