AUW Update: we have met our goal of $2500.00 for the law school! A big mahalo to everyone for your financial and moral support during this particularly difficult year.

The ENVIRONMENTAL LAW PROGRAM announces the availability for a travel and tuition scholarship to the nation’s leading annual Environmental Law Conference sponsored each February by ALI-ABA (American Law Institute, American Bar Association) on Feb. 13-15, 2002 in Bethesda, Maryland. Applications are due by Nov. 30. See PROF. DENISE ANTOLINI.

Congratulations again to these two law school bar admittees whose names were inadvertently omitted from last week’s newsletter: Steven Tadashi Yamashita and Jon Ahmen Zahaby.

Second Annual Kanakapila/Jam Session/ETE Bowl Pep Rally on Friday, Nov. 16 in the law school will be a night of live performances and entertainment from members of the law school community as well as guest appearances from local bands.

The 15th Annual ALUMNI/FRIENDS BENEFIT GOLF TOURNAMENT and BANQUET will be held at the Honolulu Country Club this year on Nov. 20. For the first time, the dinner will be open to all. The LAW SCHOOL is sponsoring a free public lecture with Prof. Sheryl Cashin of Georgetown Univ. on Thurs. Nov. 29 at 12:40 pm at the law school. Prof. Cashin, an expert on race segregation, will be speaking on the topic of her new book “Drifting Apart: How Wealth and Race Segregation are Reshaping the American Dream.” Others co-sponsoring this event include the Hawaii Civil Rights Commission, Manoa Commission on Diversity, UH EEO/AA Office, UH Student Equity, Excellence and Diversity Office, and the College of Social Sciences.

DAVID CALLIES is a featured speaker at the Annual Real Property Litigation Update sponsored by the HSBA Real Property & Financial Services Section on Thursday, Nov. 20 at the HEI Training Center.

DANIELLE CONWAY-JONES spoke at the HAWAII INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL on Saturday at a Symposium on Media, Preservation and Community sponsored by the Legacy Foundation of the Pacific. PROF. CONWAY-JONES, with the help of STEVEN DUCK 3L has published a second generation webpage. Take a look at www2.hawaii.edu/~dcjones/AALS/.

DOUG CODIGA’94 was the faculty advisor to this year’s International Environmental Moot Court Team. He and SETH HARRIS’01 coached the team of LEILANI TAN 3L, KIM MOFFIE 3L and KANOELANI KANE 2L. The team advanced to the semi-finals at Stetson University, Florida, earlier in the month, ending-up ranked top 4 in the world!

JON VAN DYKE will be attending a meeting entitled “A Reconsideration of the Japanese Annexation of Korea from the Historical and International Law Perspectives” sponsored by the Harvard University Asia Center along with the Centers for Korean and Japanese Studies at UH and academic centers in Japan and Korea. The meeting is on November 16-17, 2001 in Boston. PROF. VAN DYKE’S paper is entitled: COMPARING THE ANNEXATION OF KOREA BY JAPAN TO THE ANNEXATION OF HAWAI’I BY THE UNITED STATES.

 
STUDENTS

HISPANIC MOOT COURT TEAM welcomes LINDA ARAGON, KIM CHAMBOMPIN, YOLANDA CORTEZ and LEHINAHINA SULLIVAN to the team with returning member DESIREE HIKIDA 3L. LIZ ROBINSON’01 has volunteered to coach this year. The competition will be held in Chicago mid-March.

IAN HLAWATI 3L and JED DAVIS 3L have received Pohaku awards and TRISHA WATSON2L received a Honu Grant goes to travel to the 2002 Western Public Interest Law Conference in Eugene, Oregon in March on behalf of the Environmental Law Program.

LANCE COLLINS 1L appeared in the documentary Ke Kulana He Mahu at the Hawaii International Film Festival as an expert on anticolonialism and sexualities.

   
ALUMNI
 

PAT LEE’79, a UH Regent and the Honorary Consul, Consulate of France, was the main speaker at the recent UH Honorary Degree Convocation for Marcel Marceau, the international mimest. She gave remarks in both English and French.

 
CLIENT COUNSELING TEAM TRY-OUTS
 

Alums served as judges at the recent CLIENT COUNSELING TEAM TRY-OUTS last Sunday. CRYSTAL ASANO’00, TRACY WILTGEN’88, IRENE VASEY’93, AMY ONO’00, ANGELA LOVITT’97, MAURA OKAMOTO’97, DENISE SANGSTER’00, JULIANN TIGERT’98, ELSA MCGEHEE’97, DAVID MCCAULEY’93, and STACIA SILVA’96 joined adjuncts PATRICK HANIFIN, JOHN OKI and MICHAEL TANIGAWA as well as JONI OREN, ASSOC. DEAN CAROL MON LEE and ASSISTANT DEAN LAURIE TOCHIKI’80 judged 13 students in the largest try-out ever for this competition. Serving as “clients” were students from the UH Manoa Prelaw Society: Staci Uwaine, Chad Valencia, Jon Tumacder, Tiffany Lee, Corin Korenaga, Janel Cohen, Andrea Selkregg, Henry Mochida, Crissy Terawaki, Margarita Ayala, and our own DAWN NEKOBA 1L and MARION REYES-BURKE 1L.

TONY CAO, our resident technical expert, and his wife are the proud parents of twin girls Ashley (4 lbs 2 oz) and Tricia (5 lbs .07 oz) born last week. Ashley is the older.
